breasfeeding ansty 13 week old
« on: February 20, 2007, 18:08:36 pm »
I have a few concerns regarding breastfeeding my 13 week old, Evan.  He has been diagnosed with reflux and is currently under the care of a pediatric g.i. mainly because he does not have very many bowel movements, has a ton of gas and when he does have a bm they are on the hard side.  But my main concern besides that fact, is that when he is on the breast he is very antsy and pulls off and goes on, pulls off and goes on.  More with my left side then the right.  But it is like he is angry because he gets all worked up and will cry.  Then I will burp him thinking he has a bubble and he will burp, but when I go to put him back on he will just cry at the breast and not want to latch on.  And I mean he cries, like screams!  Finally I will get him latched and he does the whole thing all over again.  I have not been pumping much because I just work 2 mornings a week and when he goes to the babysitters house he has formula.  He seemed to switch back and forth quite well.  But now it has me wondering if supplementing formula is the problem.  I did pump today 3 hours after the last feed and I got 4 oz. in 4 minutes.  Then that was it, no more milk was coming out unless I moved the breast shields around some.  Which may answer the question of why he seems to be done with one side rather quickly.  He used to nurse for 10 minutes on each side or so, but recently that time has shortened.  I don't want to give it up because he is having these other medical conditions but boy it sure is very frustrating.  One last thing...  I have been trying to cluster feed him at night, and last night I fed him at 6:30 then was going to feed him at 8:30 but my milk would not let down because he was being very antsy again and it stressed me out so we gave him some formula and he ate 4 oz. with no problem!  That was only 2 hours after having had breast milk.  Then he slept until almost 5 o'clock, which is awesome!  I also wanted to say that we used to give him breastmilk in the bottle but until recently he will not drink it if it is in a bottle and not my breast!  I should tell you also my period just returned this last weekend for the first time since birth in case that has anything to do with anything.  Any thoughts or answers you may have would be greatly appreciated!    Thanks!

HUGS to you!  How stressful.

The first thing I want to touch on is the letdown issue.  You may already know this, but not all women can feel their letdown and those that can may not feel it all the time.  I do understand it must be very stressful but this is compacted by you waiting to feel the letdown.  My suggestion would be to pump before hand to stimulate letdown and then allow your lo to latch on.

Do you perhaps have a fast letdown and that's why your lo pulls off the breast?  Or maybe he's finished that side and wants the other one.  With the bottle he's not working for his milk so he's used to it coming into his mouth easily.  He may be getting frustrated because he's working and it's not coming as fast as he knows he can get it.
