Weaning While on Motillium: Possible?
« on: February 24, 2007, 23:23:20 pm »
I have been breastfeeding and bottle feeding for 8 months.  At the 4 month mark I ran into huge supply issues and was put on Motillium (3 pills 4 times a day).  It made a huge difference in milk production.  I experienced an added benefit.  I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  With the Motillium I have had much fewer attacks of the IBS.  I would like to stay on the Motillium after I am done weaning.  I am wondering if anyone else has managed to wean and stay on Motillium.  I realize I will have to drop my Motillium dosage for a while but do I have to quit it completely?  If so, for how long?

I guess I need some help with weaning as well.  I am down to two breastfeeds a day.  He gets bottles for the other two milk feeds in a day.  I BF at his 8am wake up.  Then I can either feed at noon or 4pm.  He will get a bottle for the other feed, plus one right before bed.  He is kind of self weaning for the daytime feeds but he loves his morning boob juice.  I am waking up very full in the morning (sometimes a lot of pain and huge leaking).  What is the best way to get rid of the morning feed?  What do I have to look forward to?

Thanks

Sorry I have no advice about the Motillium...

Are you looking to replace the morning feed with formula?  If not, I would hold on to that feed until at least 12 months.  It is unusual for an 8 month old to self wean.  Are you offering breastmilk or formula then solids 45-60 minutes later?

I am trying to think ahead for the morning feed weaning.  I will have to go back to work in June and we won't be able to do the morning breastfeed.  My work schedule and his wake up time won't jive.  The babysitter will be doing his morning feeds, so he will have to be switched to formula until he can tolerate whole milk.  How far in advance of my return to work will I have to wean his morning feed to ensure I can make it through the day without any incidents?

He does get breastmilk or formula and then 45-60 minutes later he gets his solids.  He is really only interested in the breast first thing in the morning.  Otherwise he is so busy with his day he likes to have a bottle.  He can take a few guzzles, play, guzzle a little more then play etc. until he is done.  He won't sit still for the whole bottle at once.  When I BF later in the day he doesn't stick around for very long.  I don't think he gets as much as when he has the bottle.  We are working on introducing the sippy cup.  At this point it is just a chew toy.  We have the spout kind and the straw kind.  I wasn't sure which he would find easier.

I will have to chat with the doctor again about the Motillium.  I think it is an unusual request.  I was just hoping somebody on here may have tried the same thing.

Would you be able to pump and leave a bottle of EBM for the sitter?  It sounds like you are full in the morning that if you pumped prior to leaving that would be enough to leave.  Just a thought.

On the motillium - as you probably know it's original use was for bowel conditions. I'd imagine it might take you a bit longer to wean and you'd probably produce milk for a little while longer but logically there's no reason why you can't continue it.

Definitely think about pumping in the morning. You might get quite uncomfortable if you leave for the day with 'full morning breasts' (not a technical term!) and it would probably be good to get the pumping in. Plus the pumping would likely be at its quickest first thing in the morning.

Or you could consider doing a version of a morning dreamfeed which I've heard of working mums doing and he continues sleeping after. It might be a nice way to say 'goodbye' otherwise you might get into a pattern of him being reluctant to sleep if you've disappeared in the morning.
