3 weeks difficulty falling asleep
« on: February 27, 2007, 19:00:29 pm »
Hi there,
My 3 week old seems to have a hard time getting to sleep lots of the time...he's usually yawning before he's done feeding, and it seems like just changing his diaper keeps him awake long enough to get him overtired sometimes.  Sometimes he'll go between feedings with hardly sleeping, and then he'll be so tired he'll conk out before he's done eating.
Is it normal that babies this young have a hard time getting themselves to sleep?  Will he start to figure this out as he gets older?  Am I worrying too much?  Any advice?

Hi
to be honest at 3 weeks most babies will stay awake for a feed and a nappy change and thats about it!!
there are ways to help them get to sleep (theres a link if you want it) and one which would be suitable for your LOs age is Shush/pat.at this small age they need a lot of help from us to get to sleep.
as they get older, along with the sleep training, they do eventually learn to go to sleep independently but its more around the age of 8 weeks and over.
if you want any more advice give me a shout ;D

My dd is two weeks and she does the same type of thing.  Sometimes she doesn't seem sleepy at all and others she can barely make it through the diaper change.  I actually just posted about this today.  I am confused how to pat/shush if they are sleeping swaddled on their backs.  I am trying to just go with the flow for now and start the major sleep training around 8 weeks.  I think we started to tweak things with my son around 6 weeks or so.  I was just sooooo anxious to do things "right" this time.  I would be interested in any advice.  She is bottle fed, 8lbs.2 ozs., likes the paci if she is gassy or tired, but that scares me too.  HELP!

heres a link that explains Shush/pat.
basically you lay them on their side so you can do the patting on their back and once they are asleep lay them on their back.
usually most LOs of her age need very little awake time.so no more usually than an hour and thats inc feed, diaper change and winddown for their sleep.
