Thunderstorms in the night
« on: February 28, 2007, 18:42:30 pm »
Last night DS (15 months) had his first thunderstorm and is now aware enough to become frightened.  It lasted for over an hour.  We are still doing WI/WO right now, but minimally, the last few nights have been great.  In the future when there are more storms, does anyone have suggestions on what to do?  I don't want to leave him during this scary time, do we just sit up with it?  Would bringing him back to my bed send the wrong message, probably...
Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions...

Bringing him into your bed could create problems.

When we have thunder in the day time, make him very aware of it, show him the lightening from the window, watch the rain and listen to the thunder with him to make him aware that it is the weather and it won't hurt us.  When it happens at night he should be more aware of it and he will understand it better.
By all means be with him if he is frightened, I would personally go in a reassure and perhaps if he were really scared I might sit for a while until he falls back to sleep.  Not sure if it is the right thing to do as it might create problems, but I would do that for one night whilst the storm was on as I would hate my child to be frightened and I was not there for her/him.

I will be interested in other advice so I'm watching this one.

FYI Nathan (aged 6) is terrified of the wind and storms and gets into my bed at the slightest breeze!!

Thanks Mari.  I definitely don't want to leave him frightened.
We haven't really encountered daytime storms yet, that will be interesting, but great ideas thanks.

Thanks Stacy.  It's amazing what they actually sleep through and what wakes them.  We had more storms last night that were also very loud, but the LO slept through.

Should be an interesting spring...

DD is older than your lo but she has suddenly become more aware of noises as she settles down to sleep.  It didn't use to bother her at all till a few weeks ago.  We haven't had any thunderstorms yet but the wind can be pretty loud and scary for her.  There's a book I read to her and I think that it seems to provide an explanation for her.  It's called Franklin and the Thunderstorm.  HTH
