Nursing and anti-depressants
« on: March 01, 2007, 16:47:13 pm »
A friend is still nursing her 1 year old.  However, I really think she needs to be on anti-depressants.  She said she can't because she's nursing.  Her LO has really bad reflux so is very limited on the solids she can eat and no whole milk at all yet.  So she still has to nurse but doesn't really want to.

I know nothing about nursing.  Does anyone have advice about whether she has to nurse still?  if so, are there any anti-depressants which are safe for LO?
Thanks guys.
Melissa

The subject of nursing and antidepressants has been discussed a few times on these boards:

The basic message is YES.
You can certainly combine nursing and antidepressants. It's done all over the world and as mums with PPD are a large population on antidepressants there is inevitably a lot of nursing mums taking them too.
You can read more about it here:

However that's all a bit academic if she really doesn't want to nurse. She doesn't 'have to' I'm sure. Does her LO have treatment for relfux? There are plenty of reflux babies who drink formula or move onto whole milk. Whole milk is fine as a drink from 12 months. If she does wean though the hormonal effect might temporarily make her feel a bit lower so she should be prepared for that.

If she really doesn't want to take medication which is up to her then hopefully she has a supportive doctor and people in her life she can talk to. I would begin by encouraging her to speak with her doctor if you really feel she has a problem. It's good she has a friend who cares (even if you sound a bossy one  ;))- she may find support on this board herself on the reflux boards if not PPD. And sometimes we all could do with a bossy friend!

As Emma said, it is possible to nurse and be on antidepressants....  but of course it is a personal choice and I'm sure some mom's just don't feel comfortable nursing while on them.  I nursed my first son while on them and went through my entire pregnancy on them with my second son and am nursing him.  My choice and it was the right choice for me.

I hope she finds a happy balance for her and her lo.  Maybe just having her see a therapist would help?
