shoulder shush/pat

Hi, (again) sorry, lots of questions lately!

I've never needed to do shush/pat over the shoulder since lo was so young (8 weeks) when I started, and she didn't have the strength she does now to fight me.  So I just wanted to clarify how to use it...

I know its an acceptable way to start the nap, to get them to that drowsy almost asleep state, then you can finish the shush/pat in the crib once they're calm.  But what about when they wake up too early from a nap and are way too mad to let you shush/pat in the crib?  Is it okay to pick them up then to do over the should shush/pat, or will that teach them that crying will get them picked up?

If it's not okay to do over the shoulder shush/pat after waking early from a nap, are there any other suggestions to get them back to sleep?

(for a 15 week old)

Thanks, kate's mom

Try and settle and re settle in the crib without getting her up. I wouldn't pick her up unless she is crying really hard.
