How can I encourage vegetables in diet?
« on: March 03, 2007, 17:37:10 pm »
Kyler HATES vegetables!  He cries when I try to feed him them.  Is there any way to get him to eat them.  He loves the fruit and will eat 3 oz  a sitting, but not the vegetables.  Could this be a problem or should I not worry about it?

Also I haven't given him any real people food at all.  Should I be starting to do this, and/or what do I start feeding him?

Lauren, I split this into a seperate topic so that it wouldn't get buried in your other post.

Wow, I cannot believe your little boy is almost 8 months now! Riley really enjoyed finger foods at that age. Didn't eat a whole lot, but was enthusiastic nonetheless. I found dinner time was a great time to do this, he would usually eat bits and pieces off our plates. Different veggies, pieces of fruit, toast etc. Riley's pincer grip was quite good early on, he could pick up small pieces of food. Some los are still developing the ability to pick up little objects at that age though. He also enjoyed those baby arrowroot cookies, they melt in the mouth, biter biscuits etc. Some parents prefer to bypass those though, so it is totally up to you.

You could try roasting carrots, parnsips and butternut squash.  They taste really sweet when roasted so you LO might be more inclined to try them?

I also offer slices of these roasted vegetables as finger foods and they go down well.

Also there's nothing to say you can't mix some a small amount of pureed vegetables into your fruit purees.  LO might not notice the difference!

he doesnot have any teeth, does that matter w/ starting real foods?  What kind of finger foods?  I looked at the ones in the baby isle and they all said for like 12+ months old.  What about a really mashed potato?

Riley didn't get his first tooth until 8 months, he was eating finger foods before then. It's just a matter of how comfortable you feel about the whole process. And if you try something and he's not ready, then he will let you know! We did bits of toast, just popped little bits into his mouth, he also enjoyed gumming on bigger pieces. Arrowroot cookies and Gerber biter biscuits are melt in the mouth, but don't know what your feelings on those products are. Pieces of avocado, fruit, veg etc. Mashed potato as you said. I have put links on your thread before about babyled weaning, you will get lots of ideas in there.

What I used to and still give Sophia is a variety of yellows & orange colors (butternut squash and carrots).  I also find that the organic variety tends to be sweeter and I also mix some milk and butter as well as unsweetened organic apple sauce (to taste) with her veggies...then puree everything up.  I was a little scared to actually make her food (found the idea just daunting!) but once I got the hang of it, I can at least monitor what foods are in there...I am also quite particular about giving my dd sugar.  She absolutely LOVES the way I make her veggies and asks for 'mah' (more)...LOL!

HTH!
Ana

BTW:  I do the same thing with her green veggies (brocolli and spinach)...I mix with some carrots and apple sauce to sweeten....and she loves those too!

I'd just offer veggie sticks as a pp suggested, roasted or steamed - they don't need teeth, those gums are blooming marvellous at biting off little bits, and it's good for babies to practise moving food around their mouths even if they don't swallow any to start with and just end up spitting it out.

Dd has a mixture of mashed and whole foods - at lunch today I gave her a whole boiled potato which she just gnawed her way through as we ate our roast! She also had steamed broccoli, green beans and carrots sticks, then she had mashed banana and natural yoghurt for pudding off a spoon. She's had finger foods from 6 months and is really beginning to get the hang of it now as her hand/mouth skills develop!

HTH? Ax

Hi,

I used to give my DD vegtables with a bit of cheese sauce mixed in as she was never a veggie lover and gradually as she got used to them i mixed in less and less cheese sauce and then she started eating veggies by themselves :D...

HTH :) :)

Just also be careful introducing dairy so early, check with your paed first. We were told 9/10 months it was okay to intro small amounts of yoghurt.

I had figured things are different everywhere, so always best to check with the paed.

I'll check w/ the ped.  I think yoghurt would be a good thing.  I tried the mashed potato last night at dinner and he hated it.  I'll try mixing some applesauce w/ the veges today at lunch.  Should i just mix it w/ greens or would it be alright to mix it w/ sweet pot. and carrots too?

You could start off with the sweet potato and carrot as many babies seem to like them more than greens.  And if that goes well, maybe try a few greens after that?

I mix applesauce with both when preparing her meals.  Also I don't known where you are but at around 9 months old I started giving DD full fat cream top yogurt (Brown Cow All Natural -no sugar added- is what Sophia LOVES and once again mixed with unsweetened cherry applesauce).

Good Luck!  Please keep us posted as to how your DS gets on okay?
