Need Help with Shh/Pat
« on: March 04, 2007, 14:32:32 pm »
I start putting my lo to bed when I see the first yawn... he fights sleep and doesn't seem to be able to go to sleep without a good long crying session.  It takes me a long time to get him to the point of sleep.  Is this normal?  Also, once I put him down he's up within 20 minutes, but is still very tired.  Do I do the shh/pat all over again?  Also, in the middle of the night when he wakes, can he nurse to sleep or am I supposed to do shh/pat then, too?  If I try to keep him awake at night to do shh/pat he gets overtired and it takes me FOREVER to get him down... Please help!

Hi there

Sorry you are having troubles.  How old is your LO?  Can you post your general routine?

Often babies do cry a lot when you start to teach independent sleep but this lessens as they learn to self-soothe.

Othertimes, the crying may be related to something in your routine that needs to be tweaked.

Yes, you would ideally use shush/pat for all naps and night sleeps. The shush/pat will teach independent sleep whereas nursing to sleep requires you to always be there.  Consistency is best for all sleep times.

Have you got any of Tracy's books?

Liz
