lactose issues again
« on: March 07, 2007, 13:05:26 pm »
Hi all! DS was diagnosed as MSPI at 4 mos and has been on lactose free formula since then (yuk)
at 12 mo we introduced a few diary products (cheese, yoghurt) but kept the formula. He came out in the worst nappy rash I have ever seen (and the nurses at the a&e when I took him desperate one night). Anyway turned out he had severe thrush from low immune system after anitbiotics and also 'atopical dermatitis' which is nappy rash ::)
After 4 months he got over that and was much better: I have slowly increased diary consumption and he has been fine altho 1 week ago I started give him follow up formula (on doc recommendation) and after 1 week he's sleeping went haywire and he has been scratiching a bit (altho often does) this morning his bottom was covered in rash again and my pead has decided it was the cow's milk and from today we have removed it again.

I want to know if anyone is still having issues at almost 17mos as I was told it does get better. DOc thinks he can handle some diary (cheese yoghurt) but not a huge amount (bottle of milk) and would explain why he is soo uncomfortable at bedtime after his bottle but generaly ok in daytime.

Also, if anyone has experienced this...any clues as to when it gets better??

For those who have older toddlers who are slightly intollerant to lactose, how much can they handle if any at all?
Any feedback appreciated thanks! :-*

What formula is he on? TBH, sound more like a problem with milk proteins than lactose (lactose generally causes stomach upset but not also rashes and sleep issues).

Also, do you have him on probiotics? There are some great dairy free ones for kids - we use Nature's Way Primadophilus for Children, also Udo's Choice for Infants is great.

Sounds like he is definitely MSPI. Has he been allergy tested as well? If it were me, I'd completely lay off dairy until he's two and maybe trial dairy then - starting with just hidden dairy (things baked with a bit of milk or butter) and then moving to cheese, etc. How is he on soy?

TBH I'd cut it all out for a little while until the issues all clear up and then slowly introduce back in cheese and yogurt - one at a time.

thanx so much, what a pain, i really thought he'd be over it now, is it not that uncommon to still have issues at this age?

Many don't outgrow intolerance issues until 2 or later - and it can help to avoid it as much as possible before then to allow the system to heal and re-introduce very slowly.

I would eliminate all until he is better and just wanting to pass on some light at the end of the tunnel for you... My dd is now 16 months, from 6 weeks had a milk protein allergy (I had to eliminate all milk products, even trace). At 12 months the allergist and ped said to go ahead and give milk and milk products. Dd can handle yogurt and cheese but every time I give her milk she has runny sour smelling poop. I have switched to fortified soy 2 days ago and her poop is normal now. So, at almost 16 months she can handle yogurt, cheese, I can eat anything and everything (she is still bf'd) but no milk for her. I guess their systems do slowly get used to milk products. I will try the milk each month until she can handle it, I too have heard it can be until age 2. BTW, my dd had it bad when she was young, she had blood in her poop everytime I ate trace milk hidden in foods- she couldn't handle ANY quantity.
