You should start for sure. We started as soon as bottom teeth came through - about 6/7 mos.

DS gets his done at least 2x a day. If he's interested in the morning (like watching me do mine) I'll do his too. Always in the eve. and they brush them once a day at daycare. So today, for example, I did his in the morning, and he'll get them done at daycare, then we'll do them tonight too.
I should mention, we don't really use a real toothbrush - just the little finger type. He does not like the real toothbrush - but they do use a real one at daycare.

sorry to say, but yup I would've started earlier! BUT it's not too late to instill good practice.

We started our lo's right at birth. I would rub a cloth on their gums. We bought DS his first "toothbrush" at 8 months. You have to be really careful that they don't put it down their throat.

Does she watch you brush? That's what we did to make our DS laugh. I would let DH brush mine for a bit and then DH would ask DS if he could try and we'd let him brush ours.

He is FABULOUS now at brushing his teeth (in fact some nights it's a fight to get him to put it away!) Most nights he lets Mama "check" and I do a quick once over. Some nights he adamantly refuses to open his mouth for me. If DH is home I ask if Daddy can do it. But nights where he says NO WAY...I just say okay mommy will check in the morning!

Big thing is, don't push. Make brushing a really positive experience. We went through a phase where he wanted a brush like ours. Now he wants the "cool" ones.

Just remember to use a soft bristle brush and a child friendly toothpaste. Good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Don't worry about it... I know my mother never brushed my teeth as a baby/toddler, and I have perfectly fine teeth now! :) I think maybe people are a bit alarmist re: these things...particularly if you need to *buy* something, like special baby toothpaste and toothbrushes...Makes you wonder.

I should also say that I do agree with MDHmommy...The MIL works in dentistry so she was really anal about it!

We just thought it was more important that the kids saw it as something positive. (Some kids HATE the toothbrush thing!)

But as pp said...Don't stress!

Quick suggestion - if she objects to the toothbrush, you could start off with a soft cloth.  Mine has just started teething, so I've been reading up a lot.  Nothing beats advice from the experienced Mums though (I am a mere 5-month novice!!).

My son is 13mo and we started at 6mo as he had three teeth - he now has twelve.

My dh does them at bathtime and my son watches dh clean his own teeth and then copies.  He is quite dextrous already (has been able to spoonfeed himself since 10mo) so is making a good job and copying daddy makes it a game.

He doesn't like the mint toothpaste though so he has a raspberry flavoured one instead.

I didn't start until "late" either!  We're just now remembering to do it as part of our nightly routine.  I have him hold the little toothbrush and I swoop in with the finger brush.  I put on the orajel toothpaste, too.  My friend went to the dentist yesterday w/ her 2 year old and they recommended rinsing with water after all snacks and meals.  So, I'm going to try that, too!  Also getting rid of the pacifier....those darn props!

What kind of toothpaste are you using?  You don't want to use regular toothpaste with flouride in it because they will swallow it.  They have a training toothpaste that has no flouride in it and that is what you should use, if you want to use tooth paste because plain water is fine too, but I found with my DD that she likes brushing with the toothpaste better then just water.  HTH

My DH made a big to do about spitting in the sink...And then would do an exaggerated ALLLL DOOONNNNNE! and put his toothbrush back. My DS does that now...actually kinda cute! But as pp said...water or a non-flouride toothpast is best to start with.

Glad she liked it! Off to a GREAT start! :) :-*

In the UK we are told to use regular toothpaste as the fluoride is good for strenghening the teeth. You just make sure that you are only putting a small pea sized amount on their brush and it will be fine. It is only when consumed in large quantities that it may cause problems.

Here in the states most water systems have flouride and if there is not enough we are prescribed flouride.  In our area there is a little flouride in the water so the DR prescribed flouride drops so we give her that and use training toothpaste.  I guess the best thing is to talk to your DR but err on the side of caution until then.  HTH
