DS only eats the same thing(s)
« on: March 07, 2007, 18:50:52 pm »
My 15 month old will only eat the same things.  For breakfast we have cheerios (he'll eat a few bites with milk) and then yogurt and I mix in banana.  For lunch and dinner he eats chicken nuggets (always), corn (sometimes), elbow pasta plain (if it has anything on it, he refuses), peas (sometimes), edamame/soybeans (sometimes), shredded cheese (always), and yogurt (always.)
I can't get him to try anything new.  I had him eating a little bit of slicede turkey for lunch for a couple of days, but he decided he didn't want that anymore.
I need suggestions on trying to get him to eat something new?!  Most of the time if I do try something new he won't even put it to his lips.  I try not to make a big deal of something new and leave it on his tray to try, but usually that means it won't get touched...

Just keep offering it.  My dd goes through periods like that where she eats the same thing every day.  I keep offering her what I'm eating and if she says no I just say ok and don't make a big deal out of it.  Sounds like he's eating pretty heathily though, so I really wouldn't worry about it.  DH has a cousin who survived on grilled cheese, PB&J, and mac and cheese only for over 2 years!  If him mom tried giving him something else, he wouldn't eat at all.  (Apparently he heard on TV that people could go several days without food.)

Erin gave great advice there.  Keep offering it but don't push it, if he says no then just offer him something else, if he eats it or even just licks it, make a huge deal about it.

When my son was doign the same my mother told me that when my big brother was little all he would eat was cereal in the morning, with minced beef potatoes and peas for lunch and dinner.

This went on for almost three months.  And nothing else except milk.

He is now 35, 6' 3" and built like a tank, guess you could say he survived it!!!!!

Agree with all the pp's...frustrating though! You want him to have a healthy attitude towards food, so pushing too much could make it worse. I also agree that it sounds like he's a pretty healthy eater, pretty balanced.

Personally I like variety! ;D But for some kids the familiar is what they need...SMILE and remember you are doing a great job if he's already eating healthy!

Thank you for all the wonderful advice ladies!  It is soo frustrating when it is always the same thing.  I am glad to hear you all think it is fairly balanced, that has been part of my concern.  I know he is growing, but it still worries me.
At what age do children start eating the same meals as the rest of the family or does it just vary with each child?

By 1 year old, DS was eating whatever we were eating at meals.  It has helped DH and I eat healthier.  ;)

DS has always eaten regular food - starting with fruit and veg.  We tried the stuff in jars but he just spat it out, hated the stuff.

I got a baby and toddler cookbook by Annabel Karmel and it gave recipes for regular family food but in a more baby-friendly format (no extra salt, sugar or additives) and it grouped together different recipes for each age group.

Some mealtimes ds eats the same as us, others he will get one of his little dinners which keep really well in the freezer.

My DS was pretty much eating what we were by 12-13 months. But he was a really good eater that always ate off our plates anyways! We were just careful about some of the things (fish, nuts, acidic foods etc.)

My LO is 9 months and he eats most of what we eat (except very hard crunchy things and high allergy foods like eggs) during meals. This really cuts down on prep time and cooking.

I work with children who have difficulties eating or are "picky" eaters. I would suggest continuing to offer whatever you are eating for meals, and then giving him a small portion of his "favorite" food at the end of the meal. If you offer it at the end of the meal most LOs are more likely to try new things, as they will be hungrier. And if you only offer a small portion of the "favorite" food you are again encouraging your LO to try new foods and increase his variety because he will not be filling up completely on the favorite food. Most children who have typical appetites will find foods that they like from whatever you are eating as a family if they know that that is what their choices are...

We have  the same issue with our DD. She used to eat basically what we eat but somehow that stopped. Now she eats rice, pasta with tomato sauce, japanese soybeans (edamame), sliced turkey meat (sometimes), fruit, puffed wheat, Cheerios (sometimes), veggies like broccoli but only as a snack -not at the dinner table :P

I agree that her diet is balanced but wish she would resume eating what we eat!  She used to love spicy chicken curry, meatballs, squash etc....guess we just need to hang in there and keep offering it.
