Missed afternoon naps and early waking
« on: March 10, 2007, 07:24:11 am »
I'm hoping someone can help me with my 6.5 week old.  We have been on a pretty consistent 3 hour easy schedule since 3 weeks.  We have worked on independent sleep from the beginning and she has done really well.  This past week though she has started not being able to get past 45 minutes during the 3rd nap (2:30-4:00) and then can't sleep at all between 4 and 7.  We keep the stimulation very low key after her feeding at 4:00, do our usual nap routine, put her down drowsy and she just lays there for an hour and a half.  She doesn't fuss but is obviously very tired and just can't quite get to sleep.
Then she has been waking up ready to get up and going around 6:00 a.m.  (we were doing 7:00 a.m.)  Her bedtime averages around 8:00 and I have not done a df.  She can go 7 to 8 hours between feeds at night which gives us just one feed around 2 or 3.
I know she is still young and I should be thankful she is doing so well - I really am!!  But I am wondering if the two things are related?  She is waking up happy at 6:00 a.m. - could she be well rested at that point?  Should we help her get to sleep between 4 and 7 to see if that will help the night sleep?  Or is it all just trial and error to see what works for her??
I would love to hear if someone has experienced this or has some advice for us to try!  Thanks!

Hi
seems like your LO is doing really well ;D ;D.is there anywhere else she would sleep for that last nap.would she go to sleep if you went for a walk in the buggy?otherwise thats a very long awake time for her age.

Thanks for the reply.  She really is doing great.  She can sleep in the buggy but it takes a while for her to get there - 20 to 30 minutes.  She is a very alert baby!  I could rock her to sleep very easily but I didn't want to start any bad habits.  Should I just try different things to help her sleep so it isn't one thing every time?

to be honest if its the catnap thats just causing the problem then do what you have to do to get her to sleep.
the catnap is considered a freebie so can be done anywhere-buggy,swing etc.its the first nap that is dropped.so as long as you are consistent with the other naps in regards to how you put her to sleep i wouldn't worry too much about how or where the catnap is.

Thanks for the advice.  We went for a walk yesterday and she did catnap.  And we did not have an early morning this morning!  Hopefully we can keep this up.
