At what age will my LO benefit from playdates?

My LO will be 1 year old in a week.  We have him in music and swimming classes.  At what age will my LO benefit from playdates?

My LO will be a year in 2 weeks.  Yesterday he saw some kids playing ouside and was glued to the window.  H would tap it as if he were trying to get their attention.  So we threw on some socks and shoes and went outside to watch the kids who came over and then wanted to play with him.

I am no expert, but I have been feeling like my DS could benefit from group play for some time now. We will be starting soon.  Especially since the weather is getting warmer.

I hope I was of a little help.

I would understand a playdate to mean one-on-one? Sam has been having them from the very beginning because a playdate is for mummy not just for baby.  :)
We have one group of friends we see as a threesome but I think Sam enjoys it more when he sees them one-on-one. Conversation is better and the quality of play. He does play in groups at playgroup but he still tends to gravitate to one person.

I would have taken Harry to breastfeeding group and then unto mother/toddler group.  Like Janne, we would have walked around our old neighbourhood and he 'met' people that way also. He loves to be around people, but is only now starting to play with people, it was parallel play and still is a lot.

I too have noticed that my LO is very interested in watching people, especially fellow LOs.  He smiles at them and tries to reach out and touch them.  He does gravitate to one LO when he is a larger group.   He'll be starting daycare when he's 17mths and I'd like him to be accustomed to playing with other LOs before he's in daycare full time.
