How do you know when to help them sleep through the night?
« on: March 19, 2007, 16:19:51 pm »
my LO is one week shy of 4-months-old. she generally starts the day between 7 and 7:45 AM, has 1-2 long naps (1.5-2 hours) and has 1-3 short 45 minute naps during the day. she eats abouts 14-16 ounces of breast milk and formula during the day (we can't get her to eat anymore).

her bedtime is between 6 and 7:30 PM. we do a bath and storytime routine before putting her down, and also feed her twice during her last waking. she will wake up usually between 9 and 10, or else we will do a dreamfeed before we go to bed around 10. she will eat between 3-5 ounces. then she wakes up between 2 and 3 AM and eats between 2 and 3 ounces (rarely 4-5).

sometimes she will wake up around 4 or 6, but it's not because she's hungry or dirty. we think it's because she just misses us, and so now we let her put herself back to sleep before she wakes up, as I mentioned earlier, between 7 and 7:45 to start the day.

I'm wondering, how do you know when to teach them to sleep through the night? and how do we go about doing it? she seems to be eating still at night fairly well, but is that only becuase she doesn't eat much during the day?

can you guys give me any advice or random thoughts? I did a search for a few minutes this morning, but wasn't very successful in finding what I was looking for before I decided I REALLY need to go down for a much needed nap.

thank you in advance!

To be honest it is still quite normal for a LO of 4 months to have 1-2 night feeds.some LOs can still need a feed at night up to nine months.
I never taught Sasha how to sleep through the night she just did it.I think if your LO is capable of self settling then she'll drop her night feed when shes ready.

thank you for your comment, Sasha's mom. I guess I will be content with the two night wakings for now (and keep reminding DH to be so as well!) and be reassured that she will sleep through the night when she is ready.

thanks. :)
