6 month old won't sleep through the night
« on: March 22, 2007, 02:49:09 am »
I have a 6 month old son who won't sleep through the night.  ???
My husband and I are at our wits end. We have tried everything.
playing, bath, bottle, reading, rocking, singing, cereal nothing seems to work. We even attempted to let him cry him self to sleep but after 15 min of solid screaming and him throwing up I knew that it wouldn't work. This is all new to me my first child slept through the night at two weeks and to this day still hasn't had a problem. I am desperate for any help I can get. Right now I feed him a bowl of cereal and a bottle around 8:30 pm then I go in his room and change him and rock/ sing him to sleep. Then by 9:30 he's asleep Then he wakes up around 12 ( I give him the pacifier and turn his sleep mobile on) then he wakes up again around 2 or 3 hungry. After another bottle he sleeps for a few short hours and wakes up again around 4-5am. If you have any suggestions that could help I am more than willing to give it a try.

Have you read the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer Book, yet? RUN don't walk and get it b/c most of your questions will be answered in the book.
Another good one is "Sleeping through the night" by Jodi Mindell.
Here's my 2cents worth: your son is associating sleep with the methods that you use to get him to sleep: ie rocking/singing and then the mobile. When he goes through a partial waking in his sleep cycle, all of a sudden he is thinking "where is the rocking/singing....etc".

bellamama002,
Were you able to solve the problem...I have a 6 month old with the exact same issues.  I was wondering if you were able to solve them, because I am like you at my wits end.

My daughter is 6 1/2 months and we're having the same problem!  Some nights aren't too bad - just one feeding, and others are worse.  The past few days she all of a sudden has been waking up for 3 feedings.  I'm so tired, and my husband is out-of-town for quite awhile, so I've just gotten up and fed her so that I can go back to sleep.  On top of that, she has started breaking out of her swaddle and so her naps have been terrible.

I would also love to hear others' advice.  (Yes, I have read Tracy's book.)

Hawaiigal- My advice would be to start a new topic (in night wakings) and post your daily schedule/routine. The moderators are good at giving feedback and they need info on how a typical day looks like. GOOD LUCK and hope this helps!
