Time to transition?? Bad napper...
« on: March 26, 2007, 16:35:21 pm »
My son is 12 weeks old and I'm wondering if I should be transitioning to a 3.5 hr EASY schedule.  Here's what our day looks like right now...

E- 8am
A- 8:15
S- 9:15 (45 minutes exactly every time!)
A- 10am (I try to get him to go back to sleep but he won't)
E- 11am
A- 11:15
S- 12:15
A- 1pm
E- 2pm
A- 2:15pm
S- 3:15pm
A- 4pm
E- 5pm
A- 5:15pm
S- 6pm
E- 7pm
A- 7:15pm
E- 9pm
S- 9:15pm
E- between 5am - 6am

My son use to take great naps and I'd have to wake him up for his next feed.  Around 10 weeks he started to take 45 minute naps.  After 45 minutes he wakes up and when I go in he's smiling away.  I try to put him back to sleep which use to work but now he won't go back down so I get him up.  In the morning he can be okay once he's had his 45 min. nap but the rest of the day after his 45 minute nap he gets into a terrible mood and then cries until it's time to eat again.  And it's not just little cries it's full out wailing so hard he'll be gasping for breath and I have to rock him really hard to get him to stop.
He's a great night sleeper who goes to bed around 9pm (I've tried getting him to go down earlier and he treats it like a nap and wakes up after 45 minutes) and wakes up to eat between 5am to 6am eats and then goes back down till 8am.  I'm in the process of trying to transition his bed time earlier by 15 minutes every couple of days to try to get him going down by at least 8pm because by the end of the day he's so tired from all of his bad naps.
The past couple of nights he's been waking up around 2am to 3am but puts him self back to sleep or will go back if I pop his paci back into his mouth.
His awake times are around an hour after feeding but if you consider that he's awake for around an hour before and an hour after he's actually awake for 2 hours between naps.
Is 12 weeks too early to move to a 3.5 hr EASY?  He was born a week and a half late and was a big boy at 9lbs. 6 oz.  I'm wondering if him having his bad naps and eating for such a short time (use to eat for 40 minutes and then 2 weeks ago moved to 15 minutes, same week as bad naps started) means he's ready to make the switch.

I'm happy to have such a great night sleeper but he's miserable for most of the day because of bad naps and I really want to do something to help him!

Hi and welcome to the BW Boards.

I do agree, it definitely does look like your lo is ready to make the transition.  Have a look at this link.

Good luck with the transition and keep us posted on how you get on.
