9 mo A time makes for too late afternoon nap
« on: March 31, 2007, 16:01:09 pm »
Hi,
I was a bit unsure as to where to post this question.  When I looked at sample E.A.S.Y. routines for my ds's age group the activity times seemed different from mine and the "typical awake times" table on the site (8 - 10 months 3 - 4 hours. Some are getting more.) especially for the morning.  Did I interpret it wrong?
Anyway, my issue is that the afternoon nap often only starts after 3.  I remember reading that this affects night sleep and he usually can only fall asleep at or after 8 when this occurs.  Wake up is at 6:15 am.

Here's a typical day's naps:

6:15 am wake-up and bf
9:15 am nap (1-2 hrs)
3 nap (1-1.5 hrs)
8 bedtime

He gets bfs and solids throughout the day (we are on 4 hr EASY)

Am I supposed to be putting down for his 1st nap earlier?  Should I already be trying for 1 nap?

Thanks, Carina

hi Carina
I think your post belongs in Naps really- I guess Erin will move it there but I will reply anyway in the meantime!
Sounds like your lo is getting to that time when there's just not enough hours in the day to fit in all their A time and all their naps so it starts eating into bedtime!
3 hours from waking till first nap is fine, I wouldn't put him down earlier as you'll probably find he won't sleep as he's not tired enough yet. He is far to young to try for one nap, he will need 2 for quite some time yet.
What I would do is start to shorten that morning nap. You say it is normally 1 -2 hours. I would wake him after 1.5 hours. This will mean he goes down earlier for his pm nap and will preserve bedtime. If you can I would bring bedtime forward to 7.30 or even slightly earlier as 10 hours of nighttime sleep is not enough for many lo's. You may need to give it a few days before his body clock reacts and his sleep patterns change accordingly.
hope this helps

Thanks so much Kathryn!  That really helps clarify what I need to aim for.  I will definitely try this.  Carina

Just moving this over to naps, Kathryn seems to have given you some fab advice, but I'll move it so it gets some more looks. :)

You may want to take a look at clarapist's post about 9 month old skipping catnap, going to bed early.
