White noise for a toddler
« on: April 02, 2007, 19:58:55 pm »
Just curios... has anyone introduced white noise to a toddler at the age of 2??? I am having some serious early morning wake up issues with J and she keeps waking Isabella up!!! In turn, Isabella is getting overtired.

Is it too late to introduce white noise??? We have a fan in the baby's room but I never put anything in Isabella's room. She doens't really like fans herself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi there!
We didn't introduce white noise as a toddler, but we have changed the thing making the noise - from one of those machines to an air purifier - and sometimes a humidifier if needed, and it has not seemed to make any difference. He does not notice - as long as he can't hear DH and me moving about the house during nap and at bedtime - they all work equally well.
Give it a shot. Can't hurt! :)

Can I ask which machine? Do you mean one of those humidifiers or is it a special white noise machine??? I went out to have a look at some but I don't really know what noise they make. Is it like a humming noise???

Hi there

We use white noise (air cooler) in our 23 month old DS room as his baby sis (12 weeks) keeps waking him up when she has her night feed.  It certainly works and is very effective during nap times as he cannot hear us all clattering about  ;D

I don't know the brand, but I got it at Babies R Us when DS was a newborn. It has lots of different settings, waves crashing on the beach, wind, rain, etc. I always used the waves because it sounded the most like the short wave radio set on static that we were using during DS' first week/two when we realized white noise helped him sleep LOL...

Now I just use an air purifier and that's just a small fan humming. Quiet - not nearly as loud as a box/window fan type...which we actually had to use on vacation and seemed to work fine too.

I think it was Stacy who posted about one from Radio Shack that has white noise and environmental sounds, for about $20? You may want to look for her post...

EmmaLouise - did you put into his room recently? I don't know why I am so worried about putting something new into her room  ???. I guess cause she's never slept with any background noise before and I a little worried she will be up all night listening to it  :P.

I soooo wish I would have put white noise from the start - for the past 2 yrs I have been tip toeing around her room when she's sleeping....

I am going to try to get one this weekend, because we have some construction going on at the complex next door, so I can let you know how we get on with one LOL

Sorry for the late reply.  We used to use it when he was little.  But we recently introduced it when DD was born and it really worked.

Ok a little update - I went out yesterday to buy a humidifier but they are a little too costly for me at the moment so I thought I'll try the fan (we have 2 at home) & it worked  ;D. I was a little worried about her waking up not being used to the noise BUT she fell asleep at 7.10pm with the fan on, slept all night and woke up this morning at 6.05am. Jasmine woke up at 5am screaming/crying/talking/quiet/crying/talking on and on until 5.45am and Isabella slept through all of that!!! So I am going to stick with the fan for now until the baby's EW's are dealt with.

Thanks again!

Hey there! It may sound strange to you but I had never heard of white noise, so as I understand and correct me please if I'm wrong.... The thing is to put some device in lo's room that makes any kind of soft consisting noise???  please give me more examples of what would do the trick.....         Lety.

Hi,

I have also used the fan as a white noise and works great. There is always construction going on around my neighborhood. However I only use it in the day time since it's kinda hot. But at night time I am afraid to use it since he is starting to show symptoms that he may have asthma. I'm not sure I should use it at night when it can get chilli since he may start coughing. I wish I could use something for night time though. Any suggestions? I would like to buy the actual white noise machine but have no idea where or what brand. I would have to order it from the States since I live in Costa Rica. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Amanda
