does anyone try cold milk when transitioning to milk?
« on: April 03, 2007, 17:47:46 pm »
My doctor has me transitioning my 1 year old to regular milk. She drinks 6 oz bottles so for 2-3 days she had 5 oz formula and 1 oz milk, than 2-3 days 4 oz formula, 2 oz milk and than 3 oz formula, 3 oz milk and so on and so on.
We are just starting the 3 oz formula/3oz milk.

Does anyone actually try not to heat up the milk/bottles during this transition to get them used to cold milk?

Thanks,
<Mary>

That's how I did it but I started with formula. I gradually warmed his formula less and less until it was ice cold out of the fridge. I think it made it much easier for him to accept cold milk.

Have to admit...I'm a mean mommy...When I weaned DS my doc told me to put him on formula for a couple months...didn't heat it...made it with cold distilled water...so when the milk transition happened...his sippy's got filled right from the fridge!

Even weaning to formula he didn't have a problem with the cold....HTH

I went straight to cold milk, the thought of heating never crossed my mind (that's an embarrassing confession!!), dd was breast fed so I've never had to heat any liquids for her to drink so I never thought of it. It wasn't until I hired our nanny and she saw me pulling cold milk to fill and sippy and gasped with a "don't you warm up the milk?!", I tried warming the milk at that point and dd wouldn't drink it as she was used to cold. I have to say it makes it easy for us to go out for the day anywhere!

We went straight from bf to cold milk.  I didn't want to start something I wasn't willing to continue over the long run.  I have a friend whose 3yr old still expects her milk warmed.

Me too, b/f to cold milk.  I also didn't even think of it!  And now when I make a cup of tea I have to hide the milk and walk backwards so she doesn't see the carton as she wants a cup every time, ha ha!
