PU/PD for a 6 week old, OKAY??
« on: April 04, 2007, 18:07:36 pm »
I started putting my ds in his crib slightly awake when he was  almost 3 months, as I had just read the Baby Whisperer books.  With my dd, who is now a little over 6 weeks, I have tried from the get go.  Some days work great and others are harder.  It seems like it is actually a bit harder now then it was in the beginning.  The pat/shush has never been successful with either of my los.  I have been laying my dd down when she starts to nod off...the yawns never worked as a sign for me.  If she startles and cries, I have been picking her up, swaying, and as she gets heavy eyed again, lay her back down.  Usually, on a good day, I only have to do this once.  Is this okay?  Am I training her or is this a prop?  She is not all the way asleep when I lay her in the crib?  Is it normal for this to become harder before it becomes easier?  My ds could just be dropped in his crib, on his belly, with a paci, and never fussed by 5 months.  Any advice would help?

PU/PD is not suitable until at least by the age of 4 months.its too stimulating for them.
However thats not what you are doing ;D.I used to rock Sasha to sleep as well and sleep trained her at around 3 months.she really wasn't ready for it much earlier than that.to be honest in the early days you do what you have to do to ge them to sleep!!

I'm having similar trouble with my 3  week old. All the advice I got on pu/pd was not till at least 3 months because it is to stimulating for the little ones. But I can't wait to see the responses you get. Hopefully it will help me too. Good luck.

it is normal for it to get harder before it gets easier - even more so when it's your 2nd baby! ;)

both of you, there are growth spurts at 3 weeks & 6 weeks, so you might have hit them.  if you are bf, you may need to feed slightly more often to help increase your supply.  lots more info on that on the bf boards if you need it.

and yes, this is all part of sleep training.  how long it takes... depends on baby's temperment.  angel or textbook, not as long; spirited, touchy, & grumpy take longer.

HTH a little :)
