Any successful stories about W2S using dummy?
« on: April 06, 2007, 06:39:17 am »
Hi,

My DD has been waking up after 45 minutes into her naps for as long as I can remember and she is now 4 months old. I have been slowly changing from a 3 hr to 4 hr routine and today is the first day on the four hour and its going ok but the naps are a bit of a problem because I am always trying to put her back to sleep after 45 minutes and she usually does by using her dummy or ssh/pat. I decided to try using W2S because I really don't know of any other way other than letting her cry and using ssh/pat which I usually have to do anyway! I have made the mistake when she was much younger of going in to her soon now its too late to just leave her, her phantom crys just escalate until she has wasted about 20 minutes of possible sleep if you know what I mean.

DD uses her dummy when she goes to bed and then if she has not already spat it out I take it away after about 5-10 into her sleep so when I decided to start using W2S I read (in BWSAYP) that maybe the best way of doing it is to stir her and put her dummy in so she can fall back asleep, seeing as though this is what she uses to soothe herself to sleep anyway. I don't want to take the dummy off her either...

I am just wondering if anyone has done this succesfully and if there LO has then slept through that 45 hump without any intervention after a while. If the dummy does not work then I will try patting through it but to me it just seems the same thing, using something to get them through to next cycle KWIM?

It would be just great to here if anyone else has the same things going on and if they had some success with something!

Any thoughts or advice would be great! Thanks :)

Hi Stacey, thanks so much for the advice! :)

If I do ssh/pat to get her back to sleep, how long do I need to keep doing this? Isn't she going to be dependant on me patting her? Any advice on weaning? Its great to be able to talk to someone who has done it! I have done the ssh/pat thing once already and its hard work as I had to do it for nearly 20 minutes....but if its going to help her to sleep longer than I am up for it!

Thanks again  ;D

i did it a couple of times, but i try not to, because than she will get used to having her dummy in her mouth to pass the 45 min. mark (even at night). i try to gently wean her from the dummy now and it is nearly not as terrible as it sounds. w2s works without the dummy! you just need to be careful not to wake the baby. try to turn her on her side gently - most babies feel comfy in this position.

as to the weaning - we have two props, dummy and holding to sleep (no rocking). i try to wean the dummy, using the second prop (at least one down). since she falls asleep so beautifully in my arms, i pull out the dummy almost one second after she has closed her eyes (even before sometimes). sorry got to run - baby awoken.
