Dealing with the 5:30am feed
« on: April 11, 2007, 16:05:52 pm »
Our 5.5 mo old dd is a fantastic night sleeper: last bf at 7:00pm, to bed at 7:30pm and sleeps through until about 4:00 or 5:00am, when she wakes up hungry (I am exclusively BF'ing). We did not implement a dream feed because by the time I found the BW books, she was already doing so well at night, I didn't want to disrupt it.

However, I have a question on the timing of feeds (not sure if this is the right forum). Over time, she is sleeping longer and longer, going from 4:30am to recently 5:30 or 5:45am before she wakes up. She is on a 4 hour EASY, and starts her day usually around 7:30am.

I'm finding that this 5:30 or 5:45am feed is quite disruptive to her day because she is never hungry when she wakes up at 7:30. I've tried feeding her only one side during that early feed (although she could clearly eat more, she seems satisfied enough to fall back asleep), which sometimes works, and other times, she's still not hungry at 7:30 and so ends up taking very little (which starts a "snacking" problem for the day because then she won't be able to go the whole 4 hours until the next feed).

Is the solution just to keep offering her less and less at that 5:45am feed, and wait for her to sleep longer and longer until she eventually wakes up at 7:00am only, and has eliminated her "night" feed? I had heard that a 5:30 wake up is an easy one to become a habit, so I'm looking for some advice to help prevent this.

Many thanks!
Carla

Hi Carla,

Have you tried offering your lo a cluster feed in the evening to help her tank up a bit more to see if this would make any difference?

Hi Paula,

I admit I haven't for a long time, since we recently moved to a 4 hour EASY and before that, her feeds fell around 5:30pm and again at 7:00pm (just before bedtime). I wasn't sure when to actually do the cluster feed.

Now that she eats at 3:30pm and at 7:00pm, when would be the best time to cluster feed? Between these two?

Thanks for the thought!

Carla

You could try and cluster feed at around 5:00pm / 5:30pm and then again before bed.  The timings does not have to be exact, but just helps your lo get that little bit extra in before bed.

Thank you, Paula. I'll try that and see how it goes. Appreciate your input.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

In the mean time can you post your current routine including E times, A times and S times so that we can have a look at it.

Sure thing. Here is what we're currently aiming for (give or take, since we're working on extending naps as well as breaking a dependance on rocking to sleep):

E 7:30 - bf both sides (~10 min each side)
8:00 - cereal (just started a few days ago)
A
S 9:30am - nap. Usually only 45 minutes, sometimes 1.5 hours. Working on extending these.

E  11:30 - bf both sides
A
S 1:00 - nap (time depends on when she woke up from last; generally 2 hours after her last wake up). Again, usually only 45 min max.
A

E 3:30 - bf both sides
A
S 4:30 - catnap of ~30 minutes

7:00pm - bedtime routine and last bf
7:30pm - bedtime
no DF (didn't want to introduce it when she was sleeping so well through the nights)

for the past week, has been waking between 1:30 and 2:30 for a poop. Goes directly back to sleep.
5:30am - bf and back to sleep
