Sour poo
« on: April 13, 2007, 00:27:47 am »
Ok, sorry if it's TMI but my 17 month old dd sometimes has loose stools that have a horrible, sour smell to them. I thought it could be teething related or a food allergy. Anyone ever deal with this?

She had a milk protein allergy her first year (used to get blood in her stool), now I think she can tolerate yogurt and some cheese but no milk at all (gets loose bms) so she's on soy milk. I think she's not "allergic" anymore but possibly lactose intolerant. Her bms were loose from about 2 days ago so I've cut out the yogurt and cheese (as I'm still not 100% sure if she can handle it). Today her bm was sour scented, she had no yogurt or cheese yesterday. She eats loads of fruit, could it be that? I'm getting frustrated trying to figure out what is causing this!

Her first year I bf'd and had to eliminate all milk and trace milk products. After her 1st birthday the doctor said to try small amounts of milk. I have put milk products back into my diet and still bf 2x a day. Could it be possible that she can handle yogurt and hard cheese but not my breast milk if I have cow's milk?

How often are the loose, sour poos?

She goes about once a day, they are always loose but not liquid. My ped was not concerned as she is gaining weight and she told me to test it to see if nutrients were absorbed by putting it into the toilet- if oils come to the surface of the water then nutrients are not absorbed. There were no oils floating to the top. The sour smell happens about once every 2 weeks (?), lasts for about 3 or so days worth. She's suddenly sucking her face in and putting her fingers into her mouth so I'm beginning to wonder if it could be teething related.

Jenny, is your lo lactose intollerant or allergic? How did you find out what particular fruits and veggies were the culprits?

she is lo intolerant :(.as for the food once i started weaning it went haywire.i finally put it down into a food diary and from that and her reactions i finally figured it out.she does see a dietitian and paediatrician and from eliminating these things from her diet she is now OK :).they are waiting until she is 2 to do rast tests as apparently before this you can get false positives/negatives.HTH....jenny

I would eliminate the soy milk for a few days and see how it is then. Soy is a very common allergen and not recommended in Germany at all, but I know it's different here. To improve the milk intake you could maybe try hypoallergenic milk, the doctor will prescribe that...

Thanks ladies.

Jenny, what do you give your lo in substitution? You're right about the skin prick test, when we had her tested for milk when she was young they did blood work test instead. Are you able to give goat's cheese?
Scott's maw, I have never seen hypoallergenic milk here, do you mean the formula or actual milk?

I think I will have to start a food diary. The past 2 days I gave her yogurt and soy milk but no cheese and her bm was firm this morning yet has been firm in the past while eating cheese, maybe it's the quantity, maybe it's something totally different like eggs! She did have a mik protein allergy from birth though so that's why I'm still thinking it's milk related.

India has pepti-junior which is a hydrolysed formula and is also hypoallernagetic, she cannot tolerate soya milk or goats milk either.i was told 50 per cent of milk intollerants are soy intolerant too.as a drink she has rice dream -the added calcium one.hth ....jenny
