Bottles, milk and number of feeds and all that
« on: April 17, 2007, 07:09:59 am »
Think my main item on the agenda to "fix" is that LO takes 3 bottles of formula a day, IN a bottle, and the first one is when she wakes up.

Thing is, I really don't mind how it's all going to be honest. She takes about 4oz in the morning, then takes a full brekkie an hour later. And she doesn't seem to be going off her food unless it's something she despises. And I know all the books say to put them onto a cup but I've tried before and she just down right refuses. I'm tryhing other methods i.e. cow's milk in a special straw cup; but she just balks. She actually now finds it funny instead... but doesn't really drink it. I'm going to keep going this way until hopefully she takes cow's milk.

And at bedtime too, she gets a bottle before bath. Until I get her to take it from a sippy I'm not changing that.

Anyone's LOs still take a bottle instead of sippy (My LO turned 1 in March)? And, how do you feel about it? I reckon I've got until she's at LEAST 18m to wean her, so I'm not too bothered about it (apart from all the sterilising i'm STILL doing....)

my ds still has 2 bottles a day, i am not worried a bout it, both my dd were 3 before they gave up the bottle completely.
ds will have water in a sippy but not milk, i do offer his milk in a cup sometimes but to be honest i would miss the cuddles i get before bed when he has his bottle ;)

dd is 15mo now and still has 2 bottles- one on waking and one at bedtime. She happily drinks water from a sippy during the day (and uses a few different types of sippy, so is not fussy) but absolutely refuses to drink milk from a sippy and always has done.
I'm not bothered at all, tbh. As long as I am cleaning her teeth I don't think there's a problem. There was a similar thread to this recently and one poster said she wouldn't start the day without her cup of coffee, so why shouldn't her lo see her morning bottle in the same way?!

Yea nice to hear that.... I have a photo of me aged 3 (or 4...) with a bottle and in it was chocolate milk! And I'm fine  ;D

my LO too will take water any which way but with milk - uh uh.

Do you still sterilise the bottles though?

yeah, i stopped sterilizing by 10mths.

we don't have the bottle now (sry), but i swear i have a little self-weaner!  refused the boob at 6mths (despite nothing being wrong) and using a straw full time by age one.  (sippy cup had no success here)

i definitely don't think you have done anything different than i, all lo's are different.  just keep at er...she'll get it.

since she is a toddler, have you thought about transitioning her to just a regular open cup?
a good place to practice this, is in the bath.  lifting a cup of water to her mouth and letting her practice drinking (do it at the start so the water is still clean-or fill up in sink and hand to her).  who cares if she ends up wet!  lol.

i don't think it matters how she gets those liquids in at all.  if it bothers you, and you wish to change it....there are probably some ways to entice her to use it, or maybe she's the type to go cold turkey?  i think if you are both agreeable to your routine, why change it?

hope this helps

we aim to get 16oz of whole milk in a day---not counting cheese and yogurt etc.

Sasha is almost 2 :o and she didn't give up btls until 1 month ago.
She would only want milk in a btl.Any other liquids she'd drink out of a straw cup.
Then one day i just put her milk in a sippy cup and we never looked back.Basically she just wasn't ready to drop the btls until then.

She is now starting to drink out of open cups at mealtimes and a lot of it ends up in her mouth-LOL

Mira drinks water from an open cup no problem. She also loves the straw cup, but only water. So really, I'm just giving her bottles of milk! And to be honest, it's our little snuggly wuggly time and she's so angelic and i love it! I'm not ready to give it up but I keep experimeting and if she'll take it, great, if not, no worries
