Good primer on Wake to sleep & Walk Out/Walk In???
« on: April 20, 2007, 15:39:50 pm »
Hi.  I have been trying to search to find a 101 sort of post on W2S and/or WO/WI.  12MO has fought PU/PD since 4 months.  He self-soothes 95% of the time.  He seems to have no self-soothe skills at 5 am.  I need to research and get a new gameplan for getting him thru the night.

Have been doing W2S for about a month.  It works, but only briefly.  For ex, I do it for 3 nights.  Then he sleeps thru til 6:30 for 3 nights.  Then something will happen...travel, teeth, etc. and pattern starts w/3 mornings at 5 am again.

About 2 months ago we weaned him from his 5:30 am feed.  About 3 weeks ago we weaned him from 10 pm DF.  He takes am nap around 1.5 hrs and pm around 1.  He's only getting 10.5 hrs sleep due to the 5-6 am wake up he's doing now.  Or at best he is fighting and figeting from 5-6 at which point I'll just start his day.

When I say he fights PU/PD he arches when I pick him up, so I put him right down.  I never get to a point where I feel I am being effective for him.  And/or I put him down and he flails in the crib so I can't even do just PD (he doesn't get to standing).  I have to be honest and say I get so incredibly frustrated and lose my patience so at those times he's having a hard time and fighting me I sometimes have to walk out and leave him for 5 min to catch my breathe.  (This happens when he's having a bad nap at same time his 3yo sister is fighting hers and/or when husband is out of town or something so he can't help at night.)

PD used to annoy Alex so I used to pat the cot where her head should go and let her lay down herself.  You could try that instead of just PD.
What time is bedtime?
I have to say that I haven't tried W2S, we haven't had early wakeups really(touch wood) but I am sure that there is someone with experience here who might be able to help.

I had the same problem with ds and early wake ups; ie w2s would work for a few days and then not. I ended up doing it for about 2-3 weeks and eventualy got rid of them. I think it took his body a while to set this new wake up time. And similary to what Mari said, I could not pd ds as it would make him furious, so I would pat the bed-it seemed that if it was his idea to lie down it was more likely he would stay down.

Lunababy, I'm so sorry, I forgot to post the links along with my post.  Jaime posted them for you and you should be able to find the help that you need in them.
Any questions then please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks Jaime, good job you are on the ball here !

The links are just what I was looking for. Encouragement was great too.  I'm going to start another thread to try to tackle what is going on.

Hi mumofoscar  - I just sent you a PM too...

Did you do W2S for 3 weeks straight?  Did you ever not to it to test if it was working?  I think my son is so locked in that he probably needs longer time to fix it.  Just wondering how long you should think I should try before I "test" to see if it worked.  and even if I test might be a few nights and then back as he has been doing.

I have sent you details via a pm, but just to clarify, I have finally come to the understanding that whenever I have had EW's, overtiredness was a major factor. As well as W2S, I would get him to take a cat nap in the car about 9am, for half hour, and then he would take a longer nap about 12, and I found he fought it less. All these small things helped him overcome the OT's and he would then sleep later in the morning himself. Now when I start to have EW's I put him to bed earlier that night, it seems to nip it in the bud.
