warming milk
« on: April 23, 2007, 21:29:42 pm »
is it ok to warm up cows milk in the microwave?  My 16 month old drinks milk the best when I warm it up from the fridge.  I am using a bottle warmer but wondered if the more conveinent microwave would be ok.

Well I'm not sure what others will say. I know some book I read said not to microwave because it could scauld them. However, my LO is 1 year and 1 month old and I have been microwaving her bottles for as long as I can remember. Currently, she drinks her milk from a sippy cup "which I have to hold" and I put that in for 20 seconds to take the chill off. When she was drinking 8 oz bottles, I would have to put it on 30 to warm it up.

Microwave warms unevenly and can cause hotspots so it shouldn't be used to warm milk for children.  It's best standing in hot water I think.

that is exactly what I have been doing.  she needs the "chill taken off" too.  I just did not know if the microwave can change the milk at all...

The few times I have microwaved it I am very cautious and make sure it is just luke warm..

My lo is 22 months and won't take cold milk.  He is taking all milk from sippy.
What I do is put hot tap water in a tall glass and immerse the sippy and leave it for a few minutes.
This heats it up nice and warm and takes the chill off.  May want to try that.

Hi,

We use the micro. We put it in for 2 lots of 30 seconds with it stirred in between and after to avoid hot spots. We've never had any issues. I was a bit worried about it as you hear negative things all the time about the dangers of the micro-waves.

we've always used micro. no scalds ever.;
We shake the u-know-what out of it when it comes out to ensure no hot spots.
As well, it's always tested on my wrist. Never been too hot.

I have also been using the micro since dd was born. I always make sure that I would shake her bottles vigorously and now that she takes her milk in a sippy I make sure that I stir it very well before giving to her

It's just that all the Government Health Regulators advise against it and it also says on the cartons and boxes of baby and toddler foods not to do it.

I've always warmed up DD's cow's milk (and now goat milk) in the microwave myself.

We have always used the microwave. When using bottles we would just shke it well when it came out of the microwave and then test it to make sure it was just warm and not hot. We now only use cups so I just stir it with a sppon and then test it.

I use either the micro (if i'm in a hurry) or the stovetop- I just pour the milk directlyinto a small pot and heat it- it only takes a couple of minutes.  I have also heard that the plastic chemicals transfer into the milk upon microwaving- and there is one chemical that is actually cancer causing.  I read an article on it once- I will try to find it.  It was pretty awful.  So I try to stay away from the microwave, but sometimes it's just too easy.  (I also shake the bottle like crazy to ensure no hot spots and I've never had a problem with it.)

I must admit, we didn't when he was very small, but do now, and just shake it, and leave it for a minute before we give it to him. He still loves his milk warm early in the morning, and last thing at night before bed.
