16 mo obsession with belly button when going to sleep...

Has anyone experienced anything like this? My 16mo ds won't leave his belly button alone when he is drifting off to sleep. Because he puts his little finger in there at naptime and bedtime, its a little red. Any ideas on what I should do? I am just worried that he is doing some sort of long term damage... any thoughts would be so helpful!

 ,we are going through the same.i cannot even leave india without a vest as she pulls and tugs at it all the time .she even tries to pull our tops up to get at ours,i just thought it was a faze-hope so anyway.....jenny

A vest with buttons between the legs.  If it gets sore, dab a little surgical spirit.

URGH, I coudn't imagine it, I hate touching my belly button!

Isabella did the same thing for a while and she even looked for ours  (or anyone's) when I realized she was giving it too much attention I completely ignored the situation and I put her always in bodysuit so she couldn't put her finger directly to her skin, and it was much better, sometimes when she doesn't has a bodysuit she pulls up her t shirt and shows her tummy but I try not to encourage it and after a while she forgets about it.        Lety
