When can they eat popcorn?  I'm feeling guilty enjoying a bowl while ds is napping, but I'm not sure until what age it would be a choking hazard.

funny enough...I was going to say 4...but I think for some it might depend on the child....supervised supervised I say! No matter what toddler age...as Stacy said...PERFECT to stick in tiny throats...

My niece was given popcorn at around 3 yrs as my sis and nephew are huge fans.  (I hate the stuff :P)

About a week passed and my niece started having a drippy nose, normal for toddlers.  My sister started noticing the "drip" was off coloured and smelly.  :P  She brought her to the docs and he examined her and found there was a blockage of some sort.  After xrays etc...they had to remove the blockage under local anaesthetic.  :(

Can you guess what the blockage was?  A popcorn kernel!  :o

My sister commented that she was shoving the stuff in her mouth by the handfuls and must of "snorted" one.

Thought I would add this to this post FWIW!  ;D

Ok, not letting Charlotte have that anymore!  I only let her have a piece at a time, but not taking the chance anymore.  However, she is now asleep.  Time to pop!!   ;)

LOL! Jenn.

You know how LO's cram the food in their mouth with their open palm?  That was how she was eating it!

She is 20 yrs old now and still eats like a slob!  :D I love her to bits though.  :-*

Enjoy your popcorn, yuck I hate that stuff, how can you eat it?  I can't even stand the smell of it at the cinema.  ??? Weird eh?

A x

Recently a 3yr old child died here (at his birthday party) from choking  :'( - not on popcorn, but of course after that there was some discussion about foods suitable for various ages.  I can't remember exactly what age popcorn was advised, but it was definitely older than 3, probably 5 (like whole nuts).

Hi

I think its around 4 or 5 and for nuts do not give until at least 5. If they choke on a nut they can get what is called  Lymphoid Pneumonia, rare, but it can happen. I will try and find a definition that is not so medical and post it.

I would say around 4 for popcorn. Popcorn, nuts, whole grapes, and chopped hot dogs are 4 of the most dangerous choking hazrads in kids (much safer to cut hotdogs lengthwise and then chop). Since a child's airway is so small a grap or piece of hot dog is the perfect size to lodge... Scary stuff!

Don't feel too bad, ds eats (cut lenghtwise) hot dogs.  And when he's sitting at the table, I let him eat whole grapes.  :-[

I know an eye, ear, nose, and throat Dr. that is EXTREMELY laid back.  He says, half kiddingly, that popcorn should be out lawed due to all of the chocking and hazards like sticking it in your nose, ears, etc.  He really believes age 10.  I do think it is a bit extreme, but if you knew his personality you might think twice.
