Eggs - how many is healthy?
« on: May 07, 2007, 08:30:48 am »
Ds LOVES eggs, in any shape or form - he eats 2 per portion. He'd eat them every day if he could. I've been trying to limit them to 1 or 2 times a week. Not sure why :-\

I know adults aren't supposed to have more than 2 eggs a week b/c of cholesterol, but what about toddlers? Can they have them more often, or should I keep it down for other reasons?

Bear in mind I also use them as a great way of getting veggies down him ;) :P

Hmmmm....  My DD has eggs nearly everyday.  It is a great brekkie and she actually eats them (she is pretty fussy).  The general guideline in North America on eggs in 3-4 yolks a week for healthy adults.

I have egg whites - generally Eggbeaters - DD will eats these as well, if you are worried about cholesterol this is a good option no cholesterol and full of protein.

Is Charlie still on whole milk?  One of the main reasons I moved Sophie to 2% is because she eats eggs a lot.  If you cut some saturated fat and cholesterol, processed meats, cheese, butter, yogurts, red meats, from other areas of his diet I would think he could have eggs more often.

I know adults aren't supposed to have more than 2 eggs a week b/c of cholesterol,

This actually isn't strictly true anymore although you will still find that a lot of GPs  ::) will still give this advice.

Kids need cholesterol for building up healthy myelin sheaths around their nerves for healthy nerve transmission.  I don't know what the 'official' line is on this, but I wouldn't try to liit his egg intake too much - they are a healthy source of protein, cholesterol and vits nd minerals.  If you manage to get veggies into him in this way too, then, personally I wouldn't worry if he has an egg a day even 2 on occasions.

i heard max twice a week

But seriously, what is goin to happen if they have more than that???  that is VERY limited and I can't think of a single reason that eggs should be limited that much.

In that 2 a week, do you also include the eggs that may be in dough/pastry/cakes too???

No children are put onto anti-cholesterol medincines are they?  If this is a huge concern, then the MOST important thing to cut down on is processed food/convenient foods/junk

(BTW, not a personal attack at you Michelle at all, just find this "advice" we're all given that varies so much pathetic and we all follow it to the letter and don't use any common sense)

We have them every other day cooked somehow, usually omelets with some veggies added and cheese or boiled or poached and do dip-dips with toast.  I think the main health concern at this age is more in how you prepare them.  If you fry them in bacon lard everday, well, obviously not good. :P When I make omelets, I use a high quality Teflon pan with a dash of olive oil.

Tyler eats 2 eggs about 3 times a week.  I scramble 2, one for me and one for him...however, he ends up eating both...   ::) ::) Would probably eat them all week if I let him!!

Thanks everyone, and thank you Awel for that info - perhaps they're just trying to scare people into thinking about their cholesterol ::)

More eggs for Charlie - he will be happy ;D
