Did anyone put their 1 year old on one nap a day?
« on: May 07, 2007, 18:39:50 pm »
I know this is totally not recommended, but I'm thinking of putting Joey on one nap a day both for convenience and also because his naps are all over the place, even with shortening the first nap!

So I'm wondering if anyone else did the same and how it worked out for you???

Both my boys were on one nap not long after 11 months old.  although they were both ready to go to one and it didnt affect night sleep at all.

What is going on with his naps now?  Do you think he can stay awake for 5 hours without getting overtired?

I did, and it definitely improved her sleep.  I think about 18 months Ellie stopped napping altogether, and started doing 14 hour nights instead (!) so if it works for him I say don't worry about what is 'recommended'!

I don't know Lana.  Things are going so wonky with him and I don't know why!  First off, his sleep.  He used to sleep 11.5 overnight and 3.5 during the day.  Fine he's getting older and doesn't need that much sleep, but he's crying when I put him in and waking crying as well.  I know usually that means overtired or in pain.  But I can't figure out why he's overtired since I haven't changed his routine and I have given him meds in case he's teething.  This is our routine and the change to it lately.

7:30 wake up (lately its been 6:45-7:00 with a few night wake ups where he fusses but goes back to sleep.  Last night he fussed for a whole hour at 4:30-5:30)
10-11 nap (cries at 10:00 finally went down around 10:25 and woke up at 10:55 both times crying/fussing/whining)
2:00-4 nap (cries going down this time for shorter say 5 mins and wakes every 30-45 mins mantra crying ... usually either takes 45 mins OR will go back to sleep for an addtl 45 mins)
7:30-7:45 bedtime

Today I am going to put him in for his pm nap at 1:30 and see if that solves anything!

Modified to add: Well he took a few mins to fall asleep and woke up at 2:55.  He woke up SEVERAL times and more coughing but didn't cry at all!  That's a good sign!

Is that on only one nap or did you have a short morning one as well.

I know with B I thought he was ready at 10.5 months so one day I kept him up until after lunch and put him down for his nap but he started to fuss/whine at 1.25 hours and i had to go and help him extend his nap.  That was how I knew he wasnt ready for the one nap yet.  When I tried again just after 11 months he started to take a 2 hour nap every day and his night sleep was good.

If you think he is teething then that could be what is going on with his sleep.

He did a short morning nap on his own for some reason.  He fussed to go to sleep for like 30 mins, then slept 30 mins and woke up!

Emily started 1 nap at 11 months.  I think it was a life saver!!!  Before I was always worried that she was not sleeping or not long enough anyway.  She now goes down around 12-12:30 and wakes up 3-3:30.  It is wonderful for us.  She knows that after lunch is nap time and I can expect a few hours to get things done around the house.  Good luck.

Depending on the day my 13mth LO can take 1 long nap in the AM from 10am til 1h30pm.  Or 1 short AM nap from 10h30 til noon, then a 2nd nap from 4pm til 5pm.  For now, I let him dictate his sleep rhythm.  Though I do not hesitate to wake him from his nap if I have something pressing to do.  How long would you suggest I keep this as status quo without intervening?

for us it depends on the day. For example, Sundays with church she gets up at 7, and doesn't nap till one. She is completely knackered then and sleeps for 2.5 hours, but can manage ok. Other days we still do 2 naps.

Well I guess you could try him on one nap and see how he does but it sounds like he still may need a short am one to get through.

Keep us posted

We did it at 11.5months and it worked a treat. i decided to give it a try if it works great if not then i try to get her to take 2 naps. All i can suggest is give it a go. We had no NWings and at least 2hr naps with 12hr nights.

So yesterday we went to my mom's at Joey's nap time.  He didn't fall asleep in the car.  So he ended up taking one nap.  he went in at 12:30 cried hysterically until 12:45 (but he always cries when sleeping anywhere other than his crib!) and slept until 2:30.  The issue was that at 1:15 the phone rang and woke him up, but he went back to sleep until 2:30ish.  Then we left my Mom's at 8:00 (too late) and he fell asleep in the car and woke at 6:45 this morning.

Today he's not cranky at all and its 10:05, his normal nap time.  I was going to put him down but now I'm thinking of keeping him up and giving this a real shot since he's not showinng ANY tired signs.

Wish us luck

Does that 30 min nap mean not tired enough?  or overtired?  i always get confused... seems like maybe you could have kept him up and he would have made it??  I am in the same boat, too.  She goes down just fine for both naps, but they seem to be creeping too close to either the 2nd nap (from the 1st) and then the 2nd for bedtime.  She still sleeps ok, but I can tell this will bite us soon!
