Need Help with nap problems with 7 week old
« on: May 12, 2007, 22:03:06 pm »
Gracie has been a pretty good napper up until this last week, usually napping for 1.5-2 hours. Since Tuesday she has been taking only 30-60 minute naps, usually around 40-45 minutes. It has been taking longer to settle her down and I thought maybe she needed to extend her A time (so I did about 10 minutes or so), but that didn't seem to help. She also tends to poop several times during her first nap so I know that doesn't help. After trying for a long time to get her back to sleep I usually end up putting her in her swing and she will eventually fall back asleep in there.

I have read through all the FAQs about short naps but I still don't know what to do. I have tried shush/patting her back to sleep but that hasn't worked. Can anyone offer any advice?

Here is her routine:

7 am wake her up/Eat
7:55 wind down for nap
8:15 Sleep
10 Eat
11:07 Wind down (can't do it any earlier due to sibling's activities) or nap on the go
11:15 Sleep
12:45 pm Eat
1:40 Wind down
2:00 Sleep
3:30/4 Eat
5:00 Catnap
6:00 Cluster feed
8:00 Cluster feed
(Tried dreamfeed before but it wasn't working very well)
12:00 am Night feeding
4:00 Night feeding

We were (and somewhat still are) having similar problems with our 6 week old (who actually is now 7 weeks) - here's some of the feedback we've gotten from our post:

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=92093.0

The biggest help for me was realizing that her awake time (not just activity time, but the whole time she's awake - feeding, diapering, wind down, and time in crib before falling asleep) really needs to be right around an hour total (and I wasn't including wind down and time in crib before falling asleep), so I moved everything up earlier, and that seems to have helped.    When she wakes up early, I do try pat/shh, and sometimes it works. But you'll see one of the responses said that if I can'tt get her to extend her nap, then go ahead and feed her earlier, rather than sticking with my 3 hour EASY (we seem to both be using a similar routine) and then promptly back to bed with shh/pat for the next nap.  I don't know if that's helpful for you.  We're on day 2 with the modifications we got from our post, and we are seeing improvement.  Hang in there - it's hard!
