Definitely that would be a great idea.  I'm going to try pesto chicken tonight with roasted vegetables (sweet potato, carrot so far) - yikes!!!!!  I've told John if he comes home tonight and there's a burnt smell and I look rather stressed just don't ask!

UPDATE:  got myself a carnivore now - Sam loved the chicken!!  He didn't eat loads and loads but did have some and didn't spit everything out!  Ended up roasting red peppers and sweet potato and steamed some spinach (didn't give Sam any of that) so am feeling quite proud of myself.  Gave a yogurt afterwards and that was fun  :o - I passed him a spoon loaded with yogurt and he put it into his mouth and then put the spoon right back into the yogurt bowl, back to his face and slap bang onto his nose!!!  Mr Pink Nose was in the house!  After that I just passed him his spoon and he really enjoyed it.

Hope you've all had/having good BLW days!!!!

Oh yes, and here's a couple of pictures from today showing the fun we've had

Apologies ladies, am not going to be able to create the recipes sticky tonight, have a poorly baby who keeps needing my attention - must be why she refused the chocolate cake! Will make sure I do it tomorrow ok?

Ali - Sam is so good to be doing that with the spoon so early. Lilly loves to chew the spoon.  Maybe I should just try her with it - I was a bit cautious at first - not for her, but for the mess! - but hey it's all fun.

Going to try the potato and tuna sticks today.  I found another recipe - same as the potato cakes but also with grated carrot in it. You can also put zuccini in it too - haven't tried that yet, so don't want to give too many new things....

I also saw on the BLW blog about weetabix - she gave to her lo just whole and let him go for it.  Tried this morning - Lilly loved the idea - easy to hold and get to mouth - but the texture, being a little hard and sharp meant that it didn't get past her delicate (!) lips.... will try again in a few months, so I made it as mash as usual.  OH also, I gave her a piece of raw apple as I was stewing some for her yesterday - it was kind of after her feed so she wasn't interested, then all of a sudden, it was in her mouth - she seemed to like it, so maybe I will be game and give her a raw piece.  Do you think its too hard???

part 2 (saves another post ;< ) - tried the tuna and potato sticks - I must have done them wrong cause as I was cooking them they fell apart.  Will try your guys recipe instead.  So I just mashed it and gave to her but she didn't seem to like it too much, so cheesy toast for lunch ;>.  Maybe the tuna was a little strong for her, or maybe I am rushing a little..

I cannot resist telling the mothers here that your babies are gorgeous.  And you made me smile with your stories on their reactions to food!  Thank you for sharing it.

Iris tried some brown rice pasta (I'm leary of introducing wheat so early), but it wasn't a great shape (penne shape), so none made it into the mouth.  Will try some fusilli-shaped and try again.  She also had some carrot, and I think she might have even gotten some in her tummy.  Either that or it just looks like less when it's all smashed to bits all over the high-chair tray!  I'll go get some barley teething biscuits to try, too.

Gotta go now, but I'll be back!

Ok, have created the Finger Foods for Young Babies (6-9 months) sticky thread in the Recipes section and posted to start us off - do not have the energy to cut and paste your wonderful ideas and suggestions from this thread into it, perhaps you would be so kind as to do this yourselves when you have a free moment!

Thanks Alison.

I think I've created a finger food monster  ;D  Today she didn't want any mush - pushed my hand away, but was happy to keep trying to shove toast fingers into her mouth - the whole finger mind you.  She gagged, she spat the half chewed bit out and then ate it again (yuk!) when she was ready......

Well, I think bit by bit Sam is getting the hang of this BLW idea!  We had salady things for tea (had lovely roast lunch at the pub at lunchtime so we weren't over hungry) and I gave him some cucumber sticks, cheese sticks and tomato.  He actually picked up everything on his own and put it into his mouth.  He didn't eat much but he's having a go whereas before I was passing him everything.  Then we had mango for pudding and, boy, did he enjoy that!!  Towards the end I was passing him a few bits cos it all got rather slippery, but I'm now making a conscious effort to make him pick things up himself as he's a lazy little tinker  :)!  Feeling pleased as it's only been 2 weeks.  Got sordid secret too - Sam had some chips the other day and loved them - how bad a mother am I  :-[

Well we've now started putting a few bits and pieces on Hannah's tray if she's awake during one of our meals.  She usually needs help to put it into her hand but then sucks on it quite happily.  Her other technique is to just put her head down on her tray and suck it that way ;D  She looks so funny doing it.

Is it right then that to start with they barely actually 'eat' anything?  At the moment Hannah's really just learning how to sit in her high chair (without needing to use her hands to hold on).  She still looks a little floppy in there sometimes and kind of slips to the side sometimes.  So I know I shouldn't rush her.

Yes, as far as I know the early days are just for the babies to experience the different tastes/textures of food and it's all just for fun.  They get all their goodness from their formula/breast milk, this is just an extra.

Sam's learning to sit in his highchair too but I put a rolled up towel on either side of him and it stops him from slipping to the side!!  We're not rushing him and it's all being done very low key, but what is good is that Sam gets excited when he sees his plate and really seems to enjoy the food.

The idea of Hannah putting her head down on the tray and sucking the food makes me smile!!!  I have been helping Sam by putting the food (ideally cut into sticks) into his hand, so don't worry about it - the only thing is don't put the food into her mouth for her; she needs to be able to do that herself (which by the sounds of it she is) otherwise there is a risk of choking.

I'm only new to this (2 weeks)  but it sounds like you're doing really well.  Keep having fun with it!!!

This is all so positive ladies, your los are stars!

And don't worry about the chips, they're just stick-shaped potatos right? ;) We have oven-baked wedges rather than deep fried ones here, you just par-boil your wedge/stick-shaped potatos for a maximum of 5 minutes then place on a baking tray and drizzle over a little olive oil then bake at 200degC/Gasmark 6 for approx. 35 minutes (depending on how thick they are)!

Eryn tried cheese sauce today with her broccoli and cauliflower, I put it in a separate bowl and she dipped her florets in it, then finished the rest off with her fingers - messy! ;D
