Cathy - hugs!  I know what you mean about the conflcting information - but I always say that it just goes to show that no-one knows the right answer and therefore you are allowed to use mummy-judgement  :)

I wouldn't worry too much about the balanced diet at least initially - my understanding is that the first few months of eating solid food are all about learning how to do it, having fun and experimenting with the feel of different things in the mouth - it's playing really!   So I think we all have to try not to worry about it and regard it as fun.

And it sounds like you and your DH have a great diet - how DO you get a DH to eat fruit and veg - mine just thinks they are a waste of space both on the plate and in the stomach  ::) ::)

OK - finally got my camera out to take some pics of Samantha and her avocado!  As you can see - a bit messy, but she really goes for it - I had a hard time clicking the picture before she'd shoved it in her mouth!  ;D

I agree - it's the whole of the rest of her life I'm worried about ;)

He'll tolerate peas, carrots and broccoli in their recognisable forms - otherwise I do what they tell you to do with fussy toddlers - incorporate it into sauces etc so they can't see it!!  That's not strictly fair - he's actually not soooo bad.  We've just started doing organic boxes so the novelty factor has meant we've tried different things lately some of which he has quite liked (eg broad beans which he swore he hated but had to admit are OK once you take the outer skins off). Although he is refusing to have any more cabbage after alternate days of it for several weeks  :)

Love the pics Erin - can your lo spare some hair for L?  She just looks adorable.

Things are going ok here.  L has had a cold all week but still eating well (like her mum  ;D ).  Bf has been a challenge though - top teeth are not fun bf and she has decided that biting is a fun thing  :o If it keeps up I'm not sure what i"m going to do.  Going to get some sheilds today to see if that will help.  I've had 9months of no bf problems and now it starts! go figure...

hope you are all having a good weekend.

oh, L can now pick up a broken vitabrit in her hand and munch away.  Her fav's this week are definately ripe pear - she just inhales it!

Hello ladies!  I've been trying to catch up on all the you have written and have had SOO many questions answered already!  I haven't quite read everything yet- so if this question has already been discussed, please re-direct me!
We've been doing BLW for about two weeks now.  Our LO has experienced 8 different foods (peaches, pears, broccoli, banana, toast, carrots, zucchini, and banana cookies (oops!) )  She picks everything up, sucks on it for a while, and then spits out most of the food that make it in, (although she has managed to swallow some as her diaper indicates!)  The usually finished most of her toast because she can suck on it until it's soggy.  She's not fond of anything lumpy in her mouth and always makes a funny face before spitting it out.  From what everyone else has written, this all seems pretty typical for a beginner.  She's won't be six months for a couple weeks, so we still have LOTS of time!

Last night at dinner, and today at breakfast she has shown NO interest in the food I put on her tray.  She picks it up, puts it near her mouth, and then throws is back on the tray.  I don't think it's the food I'm offering because I offered her something different when she wasn't interested in breakfast this morning.

A tooth pooped through her gums yesterday- could this have something to do with it?  Her milk intake has been the same (which I know is the most important thing anyway).  She we keep trying to offer her food, or wait a few weeks (until 6 months) and try again?

Thank you!!

I think it's up to you whether or not you want to keep offering or wait.  Either way, she'll let you know what works for her!  :)

Hi, we're back from our break in Cornwall and had the most wonderful time.  Sam excelled himself with his sleeping and his eating - Mum & Dad are so impressed with the way he digs into his food!  He had roast chicken, parsnip, potato, carrot and broccoli on Sunday and made short work of it.

Made me laugh as got a progress mail from one of the websites I used to go on saying 'very exciting time as baby may now start to feed himself finger food'!!!!!!  Um, yes ....... he's been doing that for over six weeks now!!  Had great success at lunchtime with my homemade pizza topped with tomato, ham, mushrooms and cheese and he was really going for it.

Welcome to the new BLWers we have here - I look forward to getting to know you all.

OK, off to do some washing up (again - never seems to stop!) then want to spend some time out in the garden whilst the sun is shining and Sam's down for his afternoon sleep.

Ali

ps - Sam's in the process of cutting his first tooth so there'll be no stopping him then  ;D

Ali - welcome back!  Glad your trip was such a success!

Our TinyDiner mat arrived yesterday - it's great isn't it!  I like the idea that Katie gets to know that what's on there is "hers".  We still aren't really progressing but she has a bit of toast, broccoli and rice cake most days. Everything else gets thrown onto the floor in disgust. I guess there are plenty worse diets than toast and broccoli!

oops, better go, she's supposed to be asleep and I hear wails at the 45 minute mark ....

Hi everyone,

Lilly has been going well with her eating.  Loves love loves her fruit - apple, pear or kiwi fruit are the favs at the mo.  Zuccini's a big hit too.  She's slowing eating more and more.  But you will be pleased to know that I still haven't fed her any more mushy food.  oh, except her cereal or yoghurt, she gets a little frustrated with the spoon and is starting to grab it!
Ali, sounds like Sam is doing so well.  Lilly would only eat a little of all that food.  Will be trying the homemade pizza soon.  We have pizza base in the freezer so when that's done, I will make some - i think it will be softer than the bought kind.

have a good weekend all
Aleesa.....

Hi again all,

I am getting a little concerned...I know BM is fine for my LO for some time to come yet, she is almost 7 1/2 months now. But I introduced solids to her when she turned 6 months (infant cereals) and she still has no interest in eating anything...other than cheerios & bits of toast. I did attempt the BLW approach a few weeks back and after a few days of nothing but gagging, which terrified me, I decided to try bite sized pcs or mush. Still no interest. Anyone experience this?? Any advice?? And if you feel I should have posted this elsewhere feel free to move it.

Thanks,
Shelley

Shelley, what are you most concerned about, is it the quantity dd is eating? Some los don't even start to have solids until over 7 months, and then their appetites vary enormously and can be affected by mood, illness, tiredness, distraction.

Do you have dd eat with you? I found that it helped enormously to not think of introducing solid foods as part of Eat but rather of Activity. So Eryn kept her 4 hourly Eat pattern with her milk feeds, and then just practiced with solid foods when we ate our meals. Even if she didn't manage to swallow much, she got the idea of sitting at the table as a family, and was able to watch how we did things.

If the gagging really scares you, perhaps you could go on one of those free local child first aid courses, your health visitor should be able to advise on one, and then you might feel more confident with what to do if dd does choke - but also remember that gagging and choking are different, choking is when a foreign object (like food) enters the windpipe and so you can't breathe, whereas gagging is what you do when you need to move a piece of food from the back of the mouth to the front - it looks and sounds more scary than it is, and is a useful skill for dd to have!

BLW can help the process, babies are actually less likely to gag or choke if they self-feed because they have control over what goes in, and offering big sticks also helps this, because they only bite off a bit, rather than picking up a chunk and stuffing it all in and it being too much!

HTH a bit?

Ax

Hi.  My 6 month old twins started on solids at 5 months old (baby cereals and fruit or veg home-made purees).  It went really well for a while.  Now, however, at nearly every meal except for breakfast (!), they grumble and sometimes properly cry with real tears!!  They take food from the spoon - and thankfully stop crying whilst swallowing - but then start again!  It gets very noisy.  It's as if they're hungry and don't want the food to stop coming.  If I can figure a way to feed them whilst rattling a toy at them or distracting them in some other way, they eat much better.   ???

I gave them an Organix corn crisp yesterday (even though it says not suitable till 7 months.  Oops.)  I just had a really strong feeling they'd like it.  They absolutely devoured them.  Today I gave them each sticks of banana and they devoured them too.  I can really see them chewing, which I hadn't observed with spoon feeding.  So I'm thinking that BLW will work for them.  They're exclusively breastfed too, which I know is an important factor.

So what's good to start with?  I've read the links but haven't read through all the posts on here so forgive me if I'm asking a question that's already been asked!  What's been the most successful things to start with?  (I'm reluctant to start on wheat based things, such as bread since I'd prefer to delay introducing wheat for a bit.)

Thanks for any advice!

Vicky

You're already on the right track!  Pretty much anything that's finger shaped works best (easiest to grab and still chew!).  Banana is good, my lo loves avocado (although messy), soft steamed or boiled carrot sticks, pears cut into strips, peaches.....
