Toddler in Sleep Sack in Carseat?
« on: May 16, 2007, 00:50:30 am »
Hi,

We are going away this weekend on a MUCh needed mini-vacation to the beach!  yay.  We've made this trip many many times w/DD - the difference is this time we will be going at night, leaving around 9/10 pm.

I wanted to stick to routine as much as possible - planned on putting DD down for bed at 7 as usual and then putting her in the car asleep (she will probably wake up when I get her up and situated for few minutes, but then go back to sleep).

My question is do I keep her in the sleepsack?  She still uses one (LOVE it!) and will be in it in the crib - but I'm not sure if it will work in the carseat?  And I want her to be as close to "normal" night sleep as possible - wondering what others have done?

Thanks in advance!
Tari

I don't have a sleep sack, so probably shouldn't even be trying to answer this, but would it be safe? Can you buckle her in properly with a sleep sack on?

Hi Binxyboo - thanks for your post :)
Yeah - I'm wondering that too.  It's big on her and has room between the legs for the belts, and should be no issue w/it over the shoulder - I was just going to see how it worked the night of - but now that you mention it, I will try it tomorrow to make sure it can buckle up ok.

Might just have to tuck a blanket in around her and call it a day...

Some sleep sacks have holes or slits for the car seat buckles.  I assume you would know that if your had one.  If you are really desperate, you could always create your own hole.

We had one of these, it was specially designed for use in car seats and buggys. It had a little slit in the back that you pushed the buckle through from the bottom, and then the buckle went between the legs and then up through the zip gap. then you clipped the buckle together with the straps. It was a bit fiddly to do and our dd would usually wake up, but then as you say in the car they go back to sleep again pretty quickly especially at that time of night.

So if you are desperate and don't mind you could cut a hole in the back of yours and hem it.

It did work really well, because dd was very happy and cosy and putting her in the cot at the other end of the journey was much easier. Although you do have to keep an eye on the temperature in the car so that they don't get too warm.

The thing I would worry about is the temperature, as pp said.   She might get too warm with the extra material between her back and the car seat, though I guess you could always dress her more lightly underneath.

I'd cut a hole so the crotch strap can fit as it should, I think even if the sack is big, it may not allow for the crotch strap to be snug and close to her body.   I think as long as all the straps are able to be in the right position and snug, it is fine.  You can always turn the air on if she feels warm.  Have fun!

...its what you do when you get back up.

I did exactly that. Just use an old sleepsack, cut a hole where the strap is supposed to go through. Should be just as safe. You can buy ones with a hole, but I don't know which age group is the biggest...
