Need help..not sure what to do.
« on: May 18, 2007, 02:58:31 am »
Hello,

My lo is 10 1/2 months and has always had trouble falling asleep. We battled with silent reflux for 6 months and by then he was sleeping independently thanks to the shh/pat. A month ago he started NW, and recently crawling and since everything has gone haywire. The only way I can get him to sleep now is cuddling to calm/drowsy state.

I have been doing this for over a month now, and can't seem to get him to fall asleep on his own again. I have not tried PUPD because I am not sure if his nap times are right. He seems to be all over the place, and wonder if it is a phase and he will settle on his own again as he did at 6 months?

He naps well once he is down and wakes occasionally at night. I don't know what I'm doing wrong:(missing window? A time?) My lo is spirited shows no sleepy signs.

Lately he cries as soon as I put him in the crib to put his sleepbag on and when I cuddle him with a lullaby he arches and grizzles/fights me. Then if i put him in the crib he will settle maybe for a little then roll onto his fours and start grizzling until he escalates..I PU and I keep this cycle going until he falls asleep.

I am unsure of his mantra cry and whether he is just trying to settle, when I leave him to settle he will cry/grizzle and keep rolling all over the place, then he looks as though he is asleep and he will arc up again, sometimes he ends up missing the nap altogether.

Every day is a becoming a real struggle and I an not sure what to do. I appreciate you taking time to read my post.

Hi routine is somewhat like this now.

6.00 wake
6.30 bottle (never too hungry, so I know it's not hunger waking him early)
8.00 breakfast
9.00 nap sleeps 1 hour

10.00 bottle
12.00 lunch
1.00/1.30 nap sleeps 1 hour

2.30 bottle
5.00 dinner
5.30 bath
6.15  bottle
6.30/7.00 asleep

He was heading to 12 hours at night too, now we seem to be lucky with 10.

Sharron

Hi there, you said that the naps are all over the place. Is he taking a short pm nap by any chance?

Hi Isabella&Jasmine's mum,

He sometimes takes a shorter am sleep..say 30 minutes maybe 40, those days he sleeps a longer am nap say 1 1/2. Ends up being total of 2 hours though.

Then some days he fights so much I can't get him to sleep at all for the pm nap.

Try not to let him sleep longer than 45mins in the morning. THis will ensure he is tired enough for the afternoon nap. Total of 2hrs is about right for this age. They start heading towards dropping to 1 nap (this is the begining). Offer the afternoon nap around 3.25 -3.5hrs later.

Thanks so much,

I will give this a go. This will make his bedtime later. What is the average A time before bed? 3.5-4hours?

Thamks again

Actually I think 4hrs is pushing it. Mine can only just do 4hrs and we actually get some NW when she does so I try not to stretch her beyond 3.75hrs. Try to aim for something like this:

6ish - wake for the day
9am - morning nap
9.45 - wake from nap
1:15ish - afternoon nap
2:30-2:45 - wakes up from afternoon nap
6.30ish - bedtime

Try not to let him sleep more than 1.5hrs in the pm as well cause that could lead to early wake ups. 2hrs is just about right for this age group.

Thanks again,

Ah that might explain the NW. And i am wondering if the fighting is overtiredness, because of the NW KWIM. Will try the routine and see how we go.

Really appreciate the help.

Sharron - I'm going to jump into your thread... am having the same troubles with my dd.  Please keep us posted on how you are doing, and what's working for you.  I'm pulling my hair out trying to get my dd figured out!

I & J's mum - I will post our routine later on... right now dd is sick with a throat infection so she is even more out of sorts then usual.  So I'm chalking everything up to her being ill.  Thank you for asking though!
