Milk WITH lunch and dinner? Or separate
« on: May 21, 2007, 15:56:48 pm »
Hello Everyone!

I was hoping to get some help on this subject.  My daugther turned 12 months a few weeks ago and we transitioned her to cow's milk & off the bottles.  She takes a straw cup or a sippy cup great.  She likes to have milk (usually 5-6oz) before breakfast.  She then has maybe another oz with breakfast.

My question is this - when do you give your next "milk" feeding.  Do you give a sippy with lunch?  Before? after?  Same with dinner?  I used to give her a bottle before her afternoon nap, but now we don't have bottles, so I just sort of give her milk before/after lunch, but I seem to waste alot.  We also used to give her some milk before bed, but now stopped that and end the milk at dinner and brush her teeth before bed.

This isn't a biggie, just trying to figure out how not to waste milk.  I feel as though I throw alot away because she doesn't want any at that moment.

thanks! jen

I don't know if this will help, it depends on your nap schedule.  But we do only water with meals and milk after sleep. goes as follows

upon waking - 8 oz or so in sippy (I always heat it about 25 seconds to take the chill off...that helps with the waste)
lunch w/water then nap
Up from nap - 8 oz.
snack
dinner
after dinner about 1/2 hour or so during nightime video 8 oz before bed.

I designate water cups and milk cups.  We always have the water cup around for her to sip on.  This helps with the excitment for milk.

My dd likes milk and we have had to limit it to this amount.  She still eats really well too.  HTH

I agree that it really is about finding out which way your lo will drink it best.

We don't use bottles either....straw cup for everything.

dd has her milk

-upon waking 6ozs  (breakfast 1hr later)
-milk before her pm nap 4ozs....but not too close before!  lol   if it happens to be a one nap day, she gets it after with a snack
-milk before bed 6ozs

we do water or sometimes water/juice with meals.  if she wants something to drink other than what is offered, she gets water.

Hi there. I'm not coming with any suggestions I'm afraid, but rather i'm butting in with a question myself.  What if dd does not want to drink milk from her sippy? She will only take a few sips when offered and sometimes she completely refuses, even first thing in the morning when she's wanting milk soooo badly.  She's 16.5 months. Takes 7 oz in bottle first thing in am and 6 oz in bottle in the afternoon.  Usually water with meals.  I always try to offer the milk in the sippy first - usually a no go! Do I just bite the bullet and go cold turkey on the bottles, knowing she'll be upset and not taking enough milk for a few days?

The Vern - Zander is the same, if he doesn't get his milk in his usual cup (which tbh isn't much different to a bottle but with handles!) then he doesn't drink it.  I've actually decided I'd rather he got the goodness from the milk and I'm not going to worry about it until he's old enough to go out and choose a new, special cup for his milk.  I think the problem is when your toddler is holding on to a bottle all day long - Zander has 4oz when he wakes before breakfast and 4oz with/after his evening meal and another 4oz before bed.  He was having the full 8oz right before bed but waking up with an extremely full and uncomfortable nappy so we brought half of it back towards dinner time.
