4 month old started waking at 4am
« on: May 22, 2007, 11:08:49 am »
Hi, ,my LO is 16 weeks today, she has had a bad chesty cough for the past week but about a couple of weeks before this she started refusing her milk.  So far today she has had 30z, EASY has basically gone out of the window this week because I'm trying to feed her whenever.  For the past 2 weeks she has started waking up at 4am, any advice on what I should do?  I have been giving her her paci but she's been waking up every hour after this until I get her up between 6:30 - 7am, I haven't been feeding her at 4am because I feel that I am going backwards if I do - but should I really do this considering she is drinking so little during the day or should I try wake to sleep.  I'm very scared of trying wake to sleep and not really sure what to do, any advise please??  Our routine is out of the window, i'm letting her sleep as long as she wants because she is poorly, however before she was poorly I was doing the 3 hour routine, but for some reason started to wake up at 4am.

When you say she's drinking so little during the day how much do you mean?

My DD also wakes up at around 4am and we can't work out why.  She's not hungry and will usually go back off to sleep.  But it is quite annoying.

How much did your DD used to drink at each feed?  Hannah still only has between 4 and 6oz each feed (she has 6 feeds inc a dreamfeed) so some days she only has about 25oz. But that seems to be enough for her.  She currently seems to be wanting to go a little longer than 3 hours between her feeds now.  Usually betweem 3.5 and 4 hours.  Could your DD be the same?  Would she drink more if she went longer between each feed?  It's so hard to work these things out especially when they're not well.

To be honest I'd keep feeding her as often as she likes whilst she's ill and then see where to go once she's better again.  I'm hoping the 4am wakings are just a phase Hannah's going.  through  :-\

I've not tried wake to sleep (mainly coz like you I'm a bit scared!)

Hope your LO gets well very soon.

She was drinking about 35oz then started being fussy with her milk and went to about 25oz before she was poorly, I tried moving to 3.5 - 4 hours but I found that she just drank the same.  She is messing with the teat & spitting milk out but since she has started drinking less she's started waking up at 4am - I don't feed her & sometimes she goes back to sleep & other times she does for about 20 mins then keeps waking back up.  The DF is the most she drinks in any one feed, she has about 7oz.
