Traveling - keeping cow's milk cold?
« on: May 22, 2007, 19:06:19 pm »
Hi!  feel free to move this, but I thought I would post here since this is a toddler board and mostly everyone is drinking milk, not formula.

How do you travel (plane, car) for long trips with milk?  Do you bring a cooler with ice?  Do you have a special container?  What is the best way to pack milk for an airplane and then car?

thanks!  jen

I would personally pack out a large large cooling bag with loads and loads of ice, that way it will take longer for the ice to melt and therefore keep milk cool.  Or, on the aeroplane, maybe they have fridges where you can store it, it might be worth a call to check

Thanks!

I was also thinking - you know those silver containers they have a starbucks, the ones they use to hold the milks, creams, etc.  What are those made of that they can sit out all day?? or for at least a good amount of time.

I want to try to avoid packing lots of ice & a big cooler since I am already traveling with a ton of bags and can't bring it all on the plane...

I know which ones you mean and they have long life or is it condensed (anyway one of the two) milk and cream in them that doesn't need to be kept cool, I see your thinking.

We used to use a bottle bag with freezer pack in it.  But now I would just pop an ice-cube or two in the cup or if i t was a long trip that i know i will need the milk a good few hrs later then i would freeze the milk over night and let it thaw in a bottle bag slowly and shake it up every so often.

We did a trip to San Diego last Xmas by plane and the way we stored the milk is by bringing an insulated bag with some ice in a zipped locked bag in it for the plane trip.  You need to ask the airport, but at the time we traveled, we had to throw away the ice.  Once on board, we asked the attendants for ice.  We also brought along the ice packs used for camping to use while doing day trips.  The insulated bag is about the size of a lunch bag just big enough for some milk and to keep the fruits cool.  If dd wants more milk we just buy a small carton of milk at a convenience store along the way.

have fun on your trip!

thanks ladies!

i have an insulated snack bag and freezer inserts, so I can use that.

stacy, lol, I know it is a thermos!!  Do you know what material that is, or where you can get them, or if anyone has one?  I may ask the lady in starbucks... seems like an easy way to travel since it is skinny, vertical, and can go in my diaper bag, rather than my snack bag that is fat, bulky & separate (they are so picky on flights now with how many things you bring on).  Btw the baby, us, the dog, the stroller, the bags, people are going to run away from us!  hahahaha.

What about bringing a couple sippy cups or bottles and getting milk wherever you stop?  We always bring an insulated lunch bag w/ freezer inserts.  I'm sure you could find a good thermos at Target.  You'll pay high dollar for it at Starbucks, though!  Where are you headed on your trip?
