Sorry to be unclear: sleeping position = on his tummy (as opposed to sitting up, reaching for mommy/daddy or shaking the crib bars). Sh/pat works a bit of the time, it used to work very well. Not nearly so well until right before he drifts off these days.

I guess we're just trying to figure out what to do "between teeth" since it seems he's fighting bedtime even on those days... seems he is needing help to get to sleep. Our wind-down has been bath, bottle/nurse, stories (books), lights off and into sleepsack and then into bed for a long time -- does it normally need to extend/change somehow at this time? It doesn't seem to be getting him quite ready for sleeping.

Thank you again!!!

Can he roll both ways?  If so I would put him down and let him get himself into whatever position he wants.

Pu/pd is probably the best thing to use for sleep training.  You can't do this if you know he is in pain though.  I think it is probably your best bet.
He may need a bit longer of a windown routine.

Thanks! Yes, he definitely rolls, sits, etc... last night was better, I think. I stayed in his room but didn't pick him up until his crying escalated, then just held him a few minutes and put him back. it took awhile but he eventually went to sleep on his own, and stayed asleep -- cried out once but went back to sleep on his own...
Do think we need a longer winddown routine, will have to think about what else we could do!

We danced with Claire before bed at that time.  Just one dance to a song, not in her room, then read books, had a bottle and then bed.  Also, if you are doing bath as part of windown maybe it is working him up instead of relaxing him.  Some babies tend to get excited after baths.  Mine does!  We never do a bath within one hour of bedtime.

Oh! I like the dance idea... he loves it when we dance with him. Will watch the bath and try to figure out if it actually might be winding him up... thanks again!
