Warming bottle in a microwave...anyone do it?
« on: June 04, 2007, 11:10:55 am »
Now I know the recommendation is not to warm baby's bottle using a microwave, but I guess I'm just interested to see if anyone does use this method or not.  Surely if the bottle is very well shaken after coming out of the microwave the hotspots would be avoided.  I've never tried it myself (always too scared).

If you do warm the milk in the microwave how long do you put it in for?

I tend to make up the next feed ready an hour or so before needed (just in case Hannah wants it early).  But now we have to add gaviscon to the milk and it doesn't mix in unless the milk is quite warm.  But it seems to take sooo long warming it up (from the fridge) in a jug of hot water.  This is why I was wondering about using the microwave.

I never did it until they were 12months (i have no idea why I decided at 12 months it was ok  ???). Anyways, I do for 40secs for a 180ml bottle (which is about 6.5-7oz)

When I had ds the nurse explained to us that putting milk in th microwave was not good, however, she understood in real life you couldnt wait forever or it wasnt convenietn, so she thought it would be ok.  The only reason its not adviced is for the hotspots but if you do dhake it really well and make sure its not too hot you should be ok.  We never warmed his milk, but I have friends who have used it and they put it in for 15 deconds at a time and shake it really well and check it. Hope this helps, CHristie

LOL Layla, I decided when dd was 6 months it would be ok and have no idea why that particular age!  ;)
I have always done 35 secs for 8-9oz and then give it a good shake afterwards.
I remember discussing this very subject with a friend (her lo is the same age as mine). Her dh was there - he's super-intelligent with all sorts of scientific qualifications- and he said "hot spots? Just shake it, it's a liquid, not a pie!" LOL that has stayed with me ever since!

Have to say that's the logic I always used.  Just make sure you don't have the lid on otherwise it creates a vacuum and you can't get the lid off without shooting it across the kitchen!

Good points everyone.  I always thought the same thing about shaking.

You know, I have to admit for various reasons I went back to the old fashion way of warming the milk/formula in a pot on the stove.  I couldn't believe I had to go to all the "trouble."  Actually, it warms super fast.   I guess life isn't so rough.  ;D

yep we heat our bottles in the microwave, well bottle as she only gets one now. For a 9 oz bottle I put it in for 30 seconds. Really just long enough to take the chill off it.  Just give it a good old shake

definitely have warmed bottles in microwave ever since I can remember. partly because we had the Gaviscon issue too and partly because DS was just impatient as hell!! Just shake it up first and test before giving it.

IMO the warning against doing this is yet another overly cautious piece of advice which ought to be scrapped!

i always did it too.  i know the advice against it but my LO is super impatient also.  to avoid uneven heating, i stir with a spoon.  i haven't had problems with DD burning her tongue but i'm always aware of mixing the milk well.

I have six children and i have microwaved bottles for all of them
my sisters have 4 and 3 children and both have always microwaved

we shake well and no problems

if you werent told not to use microwave would you be so careful to ensure well shaken
if you werent told coffee is hot would you burn your mouth

the baby milk companys are basically covering themself in case of an accident that would be avoided by not using the microwave.IMHO

Hello Hazel (and DJ)

My baby is 10 weeks old and has been bottlefeeding exclusively since 4 wks and at around 6 wks I started using the microwave,I know all the milk powders say not to because of hotspots but who would take a bottle straight from the microwave and pop it straight into their baby's mouth? I think that this is just the manufacturers way of covering themselves because if you shake or manipulate the milk sufficiently, you have no probs, or at least I haven't. Plus if you want to go out, establishments are gradually phasing out giving you hot water to warm you bottles as they see it as a possible scoulding hazard if you knock the container over (the country is becoming sooo pc) but to a certain degree I see their point.
