Hello Hazel,

I have just clocked what you have said about using Gaviscon - that will teach me for not reading ahead before getting my two-penith in  ;D You said that your using Gaviscon, I used it for Sam when he was 6wks until 8 1/2wks due to him being refluxy, was wondering if this is why your using it with your babe. I found that the longer you used it, the more you needed to use to see an improvement, when the dr told me that he would probably need to be on it for some time (briefly took him off - half a day, and it all came back) I started to do some research on the internet as I didn't fancy my young baby being on medication if he didn't need to be, and that was when I stumbled across SMA Staydown, it is a milk for 'significant reflux' the reason why I had never come across this milk is because it is only sold in larger Boots stores, nowhere else, and it worked a treat, from the word 'go'.

Samuel was on C&G Comfort and I know know that it fuelled most of his reflux as I have now switch to SMA white with no problems at all. I know all baby's are different but I found that Staydown was a miracle, Sam went from being a crying, grimacing, sicky baby to being contented and happy, he still does bring back milk, but only normal possets rather than going through 4-6 clothes changes a day.

Hope this helps  :)

IMHO - of course if the bottles can be sterilised in the microwave steriliser, then they should be safe to microwave to warm, considering time is considerably less for a reheat than to sterilise.

I also never (and will never) microwave my bottles.  As Stacy mentioned, most bottles say "Do not microwave" so I don't.  I know they give the excuse of hot spots, but I also worry that the plastic is not microwave safe.

We dunk & swish ours in a cup or coffee mug under running hot water - very quick, like 30 - 45 secs!  Of course, we're just taking the chill off.

It was explained to me that the reason behind not using the microwave is because is destroys the nutrients and minerals in the milk. This is actually true for all things that we microwave. Handy gadget but perhaps not the most healthy for us.

On another aside, the microwave sterilizers do not actually get hot enough long enough to truly sterilize, same is true with the dishwasher ones. Boiling the bottle, nipples, etc on the stove for 10 minutes will ensure the items are properly sterilized.

Hey there Hazel,

We've met on our Jan/Feb 2007 Birth Club Thread. Have looked at your dropshots of your babies and they are just to to cute you must be the proudest Mummy.

So my thoughts on my microwave is that I also heard that they kill all the nutrients and minerals out of the milk. But what I do is that I prepare all my bottles of boiling water the night before, cool them to room temperature and then stick them in the fridge. An hour or so before the feed I take it out to make it room temperature again and then put the bottle with the water only in the microwave for 40 sec (bottle is 150mls) and then add my powder, and shake shake shake. I did this for my DS as well. Mia also suffers from reflux but it started when I was breastfeeding, what I was advised to do, which I found worked, was to give her 1ml of Adult Gaviscon just before a feed and then feed her - worked like a dream. Those powders seem like a mission. So even though I'm formula feeding now I still use the 1ml of normal Gaviscon.

But you need to do what works for you and for your LO. Happy Mum, Happy Babe.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide  :)

One thing to note--if you use Dr. Brown's bottles you are not supposed to microwave the internal parts.
but who would take a bottle straight from the microwave and pop it straight into their baby's mouth?

LOL!  I thought the same thing myself!!!

I did see something on "Extra" the celebrity TV show the other day...they were doing a segment on "mannys" (male nannys) to the stars.  He said that microwaving destroys some of the nutrients.  But he looked like a goofball so I don't buy it...

I just saw this thread and thought I'd add my two cents too. :)  Regarding microwaving, you must remember that this is radiation that can change the chemical composition of its subject.  Like when you cook meat... the chemical composition has changed.  I can't imagine that formula or plastic would be different in that manner.

When I would make a bottle, I ran it under warm water and let it sit in a cup for a few minutes when I changed ds.  HTH

I agree with Stacy 100% - Most bottles are not microwavable and heating in the microwave can kill nutrients in the milk.

I have always microwaved, in fact my healt visitor told me as long as I shake it real good its fine, and she said the chemical composition thing was untrue as I asked her  :-\

I've actually decided not to warm botles in the microwave.  It seems to be something that 'may' be a problem so seeing as it would just have been a convenience for me I have stuck to using a jug of boiling water  :)  It actually doesn't make that much difference.
Thanks again everyone.  It's always reassuring to get other people's opinions.
