Baby Einstein Addiction?
« on: June 05, 2007, 16:58:49 pm »
My 9 1/2 mo old LOVES baby einstein!  I'm just wondering how much is too much? ... After all it is educational  ;)  He's mostly an angel baby with a streak of spiritedness...and the spirit really comes out when he's eating.  He hates being feed in the highchair - I think he's just bored...because if I put on baby einstein he'll eat and eat and eat.........  He was teething for the last month so I didn't care how I got his food in him as long as he ate.  He eats so well while watching baby einstein that I do it for every meal, otherwise he throws a fit and doesn't eat much.  I guess I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there who did this when their babies were young and now regret it??  Or should I just go with the flow since it seems to be working great?  I just know that if I try to feed him without it I'll struggle through every meal with him again - and thats no fun for either of us.  If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated - thanks!  :)

i think if it works go with it.  i think them eating is so important so anyway you can get food into him is fine.
my dd LOVES the baby einstien videos, too... and she is 3 now.  she loved them ever since she was around 9 months, too.  it's nice cuz now we can use them for leverage if she is not listenting kind of like a time out thing but using the video and it makes nice gifts and special time since they love it so much.
good luck!!

Hi there!

My dd watched her first Baby Einstein when she was 3 or 4 months old  :-[ :-\   She doesn't watch them so much anymore but we have a vast collection of them and she has learned a whole bunch from them too! I feel much better about her watching those rather than regular t.v.   As for watching television and eating....my dd will eat and eat and eat if the t.v. (or BE is on).  For us...it is a bad habit that I don't want to start. Every now and then it will be on for some reason but I really get anxious when I see how 'zoned' out she gets while watching television and eating.  I know that television watching is one of the #1 reasons there are so many more obese children these days b/c they will watch and eat and watch and eat and not even be aware of how much they eat. I know we only have babies...but they grow fast and habits start early.

Just my two cents ;D

Thanks for the advice!   :)  I think for now I'll keep with what's working...and try not to feel too guilty about it  ???  He's moving around so much now that I'll do what I can to get him to eat.  I guess I'll just have to monitor how much BE he's watching at other times.

his is a very personal issue and you really have to do what you think is best..my only worry is a pewrsonal one.  I eat a lot more if I`m watching TV and not paying attention to my body`s `signals`kiwm.   When kids are hungry they eat.  I say this as a paranoid freak baout food...I try ot make usure that L is eating on a very regular basis and with us at meal times and as a family...if she doesn`t eat a lot at lunch she usually will at her snack (or vice versa)....I wouldn`t say stop completely-maybe just be aware that you want your DC to be aware of what he`s eating and why

I'll def be more careful when he's feeding himself - but while I'm feeding him he can't overeat because I'm controlling how much food I'm giving him...so I guess I'll just have to monitor it so that it doesn't get out of control when he gets older.

I wouldn't worry about it.  As long as he is eating AND it is educational.  We bought the sign language one a few months ago and DS learned a TON!

I'm all for teaching your baby a lot of positive things, but I believe that the best teachers are the parents, not some video.
But this is my personal opinion. If it works for you, go for it!

I think we can all agree on that comment!! I am sure none of us use the videos as a replacement for sitting down and reading/teaching our babies!  Wouldn't that be sad  :-[

Well, we don't own a tv for a reason. If we want to watch a movie, we watch it on our computer. When I was in the hospital over the weekend for a spider bite, the only thing on that was the slightest bit interesting was a show about young hollywood and how much trouble they seem to love to get into. I definitely don't want another Paris Hilton on my hands. *shudder* There's too much indecency on tv these days. I'd much rather take Ella to the park or to the library to pick out some bedtime story books. I also get educational picture books(like this one series I like has pictures of ancient artifacts from different countries. Ella loves to stare at them.) and read them to her.
Sadly, so many parents these days just plop their children in front of the tv and leave them there for HOURS. *sighs and shakes head*
