I really need help....
« on: June 07, 2007, 01:59:03 am »
It is now 8:50 pm and I put my ds down at 8:00 pm and since 8:40 he has woken up screaming 5 TIMES!!!  Now I am used to him waking crying about 30-40 minutes after I put him to bed once or twice after I put him down and then he will usually wake up 2-3 more times in the night, and I go in and put the paci in, but tonight is crazy.  I am going to pull every blonde hair out of my head.  This has got to end sometime!  Now he does have a slight cold and he has always wheezed and is on breathing treatments, also he has had 5 ear infections in his short 6 months of life.  But even when there is no sickness he does this same thing.  So I have to think it could be another ear infection although on Friday the pedi said his ears where free and clear!  Can anyone offer me any words of wisdom?  It really helps to know I am not the only one out there with this problem!

Thanks for the response, we have been sooooo busy, this is the first I have had to sit at the computer!  Okay, guess what?  My ds had double ear infections!!!  I took him to the dr. on Friday and sure enough...  This is his fifth time in for ear infections!  So how horrible do I feel about all those wakings!  DUH!  No wonder!!  He got a fever Friday so i was like I better bring him in, then sure enough...  So he slept great Friday night, and Sat. night on antibiotics and Donnatussin for runny nose and cough.  But last night he woke at 2 and would not resettle.  We had to bring him into bed with us and feed him a few oz. to settle down at 4 am.  I did not want to pick him up because that does not help him settle so I just kept popping in the pace and patitng him and he would get close to sleep then scream again.  I don;t know if this is stil the ears or his teeth (2 bottom) have finallt cut through.  It is so hard because we have 2 great nights no waking then BAM it's back to the bad again.  It is so hard being sleep deprived ya know?!  The dr. is going to have my ds finish this 10 days of antibiotics then if all ears are cler he will put him on a month long dose to really get everything as clear as new, and maybe just maybe this will halp prevent such recurrance of infections.  But if after a month of antibiotics he gets one 2 weeks or so later then he will have to go to an ENT specialist.  Has anyone had an experience like this??  I could use some support and some success stories with the ear situation.  Thanks ya'll!

Hi,
We have had a few ear infections, actually, we have one now.  >:(  Kate, a mom in my birth club, has had a ton of trouble with ear infections and her son ended up getting tubes.  I will send her over as she would know all about it.

Hi Sophiesmom,

Myia's right, we have had a ton of trouble with ears. Actually, but not as much as you! We had 4 consecutive double ear infections and opted for tubes. It's a really painful thing for LOs to have all of these ear infections - and can really screw up their sleep!

My advice to you would be: "get thee to an ENT, ASAP." Go ahead and get the referral and see what the ENT says about ear tubes. My pediatrician was pretty firm that ear tubes are a much better solution than repeated courses of antibiotics. Obviously there's risk with any surgery, but honestly, it's an extremely simple, quick, outpatient procedure and made all the difference in the world with our son...

6 mos. is young, but I would still do the consult with the ENT and get his opinion. They are much more qualified to make reccos than pediatricians are since it's their specialty. Do try to find one who is good with children.

In the meantime - try giving your LO a pillow to prop up while sleeping - or put him in his car seat to sleep. You want to elevate their little heads because the pressure from lying down can really cause a lot of pain - which is why it's worse at night. Don't hold back on the pain medicine, or any other meds the doctor gives you - if he's given you a decongestant, use it because it helps to dry up the fluid that's causing the pain. And, it sounds like your LO may just have the anatomical weakness in the Eustachian tube that equals an ear infection pretty much every time there's a cold or allergy...so until you can get the ENT appointment you might end up on a preventative course of antibiotics. Another mom in our birth club has experience with that - Cath - I'll ask her to come over and give you the skinny on that course of treatment, esp. since there's a chance they may have to hold off on tubes until your LO is a tad older :(

Hang in there, and be patient with him. He's in pain, so you've got to treat that before you worry too much about independent sleep. Keep us posted.

It is so hard being sleep deprived ya know?!
Yes yes yes!!!!
Poor you. Isn't it a relief though to KNOW what is causing the problems though?!! Not that you'd wish it on him but I used to find the feeling of being totally in the dark and not having a clue how to 'fix' things was just awful!
Really hope he gets better with the meds and you all get a few decent nights' sleep IN A ROW!!!

Hi! We went through a nightmare for months with loads of ear infections. Worked out at about 1 per month. Our doctor got us to see an ENT. The advice we received was we could do tubes if we wanted but as DS was so young they advised a low dose antibiotic that we gave twice a day. We went with that and he had it for 6 months through the winter months when ear infections are more prevalent. During the 6 months he had it he still had 2 but that was so much better than prior to that. When we returned to the ENT and he took him off the antibiotics as we were approaching Spring. Touch wood, he hasn't had another one since. We are to go back to the ENT in October as we approach the winter months again to review the situation. I wasn't happy about giving him antibioitics every day but at least it wasn't a permanent thing.

Ear infections suck and I can certainly sympathise with you. Apparently they are VERY common when they are so young because the ear, nose and throat tubes are so close to each other. As they grow up the distance between them gets larger and ear infections are less likely. The antibiotics were a good option for us but go with what you feel is right. Tubes I believe are a VERY common and the procedure is simple with a low risk.

Good luck! I hope things get better for you. Hugs
Cath, 33

Also, if your DS is taking antibiotics, it might be a good idea to also give him probiotics to replace any 'good' bacteria. My DD got a tummy bug that lasted longer than normal immediately after finishing a course of antibiotics so now I give probiotics if either of them is on antibiotics.

That's great advice - you can buy little packets of lactobacillicus (sp?) and keep them in the fridge. Mix into yogurt, or whatever, for additional good bacteria. This is a good thing to have on hand for any kind of tummy bug issue. It lasts for several months in the fridge. :)

You guys are great!  I know it has been a few days since I wrote but knock on wood, he DID have another ear infection but he has slept through the night since he got on a totally different antibiotic.  The doctor said we would do this for 10 days then we go on Wed. to have his ears checked and if they are clear we will do a month of antbiotics as a preventative!  I will keep you all posted.  Thanks for all of the hugs and advice.  But boy getting some consecutive nights of sleep has helped so much.  And he has learned to put his paci in all by himself and go back to sleep!  The Lord must be smiling down on me at least for a little while!   Kari :)
