Troubles with feedings
« on: June 07, 2007, 15:22:36 pm »
My daughter is almost 2 months old and I'm having troubles feeding her. She will eat an ounce or two then starts to wiggle like she's got to burp but even after she burps she still does it. Does anyone else have this probelm. Also when she eats even when she is sleeping she gasps for air. I know it's not from the bottle it seems like her airway closes off. She even does it when she's sleeping. Can someone help me???

She doesn't get hiccups as much as she use too and she doesn't spit up very often. I don't think that it is reflux. I it seems like her airway just closes off.

It could be that the acid is travelling back up, making it hard for her to breath...............

try smelling her breath(i know sounds daft) but you might be able to smell the acid??? i could with ds!
not all reflux babies spit up.....
if you really think it isn't reflux............. maybe she needs  faster flow teat some babies get fed up if the food isn't coming quick enough

Hello Murbinsky,

Oh yes, do I know what your talking about  ;D

My babe does this too, or used too until I discovered Dentinox colic drops. It sounds like your baby holds on to his wind, when his belly is so full of wind he wants to feed but the mink is going down into a gasey stomach which causes them to thrash their heads about and arch their backs like they are trying to get away from it. A friend of mine was having the same problem with her son, she put the dentinox in his milk and hasn't looked back from that first bottle.

It doesn't cure the problem because you obviously have a windy baby, but when he starts to get uncomfortable when feeding, stop, and wind him, this should only take a couple of minuts, if that, to bring a a cluster of burps or one huge belch then you should be able to carry on. Although, it says they are 'COLIC' drops, they are more specifically for windy babies rather than colicky babies that cry a lot.

Give it a go, its worth a try as it is useable from birth so your not giving anything nasty. You can put it straight into the milk too, which means no faffing about trying to get you baby to take it by mouth, so no stress.

If you decide to use it, let me know how you get on.

Good luck  ;D

We started having trouble almost a month ago, and I posted on a number of boards - reflux, I think here, I can't even remember everywhere.  We started on Axid for reflux, and three days later DD started to get sick congestion, lethargy, - she had an ear infection.  Not 100% sure if the ear infection was the whole problem or what - she was arching, crying, wouldn't let me hold her on one side, would only feed while being held sitting in the rocker in her nursery, just weird stuff.  When she was diagnosed with the ear infection, it had only been 8 days before that we had seen the pediatrician who had looked at her ears then and they were fine.  I've been calling it a "sneaky" ear infection.

We've just finished the antibiotics today and are still on the Axid.  I'm going to give it a couple of days to make sure we're finished with the infection once she is off the antibiotics and then I'm thinking about stopping the Axid to see which one it really was.  Just something to think about.

Oh, other things I thought about/tried when trying to figure out this whole - don't want the bottle, but am starving thing - bigger nipple size, teething meds (she was almost 4mo though when we started having these problems, but in a very rare instance I understand sometimes babies as young as your lo can be teething), different positions, trying to make things as non-stimulating as possible - lower lights, no tv or other noises - not even the laptop nearby.  So there are just some things to think about/try.  Hope that helps!!! :)  Good luck

My DS started getting congested at about 6-7 weeks--took him to the pedi who said he had an ear infection.  After hearing him cry--a hoarse, nasal cry--she said she thought he had reflux and put him on Prevacid.  He was not one to spit up hardly ever but had started a few days before his visit to the doctor.  I was trying to nurse at the time but DS had reduced his nursing time and was crying at every feed.  After weighing him at the 2 mo visit he was only in the 5th percentile on his weight.  The doctor said I needed to start supplementing with formula at every feed.  She also said I needed to eliminate all dairy from my diet and recommended Nutramagen formula (which DS hated but he liked Alimentum) because he was gassy (farting)  ALL the time.  He wiggled when he was gassy.

DS gave up nursing within a couple of weeks--I was very sad but when we took him in for a weight check, he had gained 2 lbs in 12 days!  I was not sad any more after that because I knew he needed the nutrition and he couldn't get it from me.

I am mentioning all of this because you can have reflux without spitting up and the "closing airway" sound can be from refulx too--when I was researching it I read where refulx can cause apnea.

Good luck!
