i'm new and have a lot of problems!
« on: June 09, 2007, 10:27:03 am »
hi, i'm ray and my daughter is 7 months. she was exclusively breastfed till 6 months and then we started solids. she was ok for a week or so but now she screams at the sight of the spoon. she will not sit in her high chair or eat any solid food at all. she will only take the breast and as a result is waking more at night... :-[

any advice?

thanks

i try and offer solids before milk, but she always refuses  :(

she will take some pear and baby rice or a rusk. i have tried apple, carrot, pumpkin, peach, chicken...she hates them all. she is actually afraid of the spoon i think and cries when she sees it. she will feed herself a rusk but nothing else. have tried finger food but she throws it on the floor

hi there! I know it's hard but please try not to worry, I've often had to tell myself...he won't be drinking only milk when he's 4 right??? not that u'll have to wait that long..was just trying to make a point :-\  What agree about it not to make an issue of it...offering milk an hr before solids is a good idea as even now my DS loses his patience with a meal if he needs tochew too much ::) so very hungry isnt always that beneficial. My DS hated baby rice and isnt a fan of sweet stuff, far mor einto savoury, have u tried a few savoury things? how about soem finger food? If it is the spoon she dislikes, it may be worth giving her a few things she can hold? cheese that sort of thing...
hang in there, it'll get easier. I would keep in mind milk is primary source of nourishment till 1 yr old but maybe reduce the amount she's having say 1 hr before a feed to ensure she is actually hungry enough for solids!
I do agree that solids dont make them sleep better...far from, in our experience it gave all sorts of gas etc which was unpleasant!

thanks yaya. i suppose i was hoping the solids would keep her feeling full and stop her waking from hunger. she is 22lbs, so quite a big baby. i gave finger food today, she threw it on the ground!!

however she did eat some pear in the car, she was in her baby seat and my mum was driving, think she thought it was a game  :)

thanks stacy. i do not limit breastmilk, she is fed whenever she likes but she does not have a big appetite and rarely looks for feeds less then every 4 hours.

i shall try and relax and maybe try baby led weaning..sure i waited 6 months..what does another few matter

I'd advocate the baby-led weaning approach, worked a treat for my dd#2, and there's a good introduction to the approach in the FAQ (hee, hee - not only saying that 'coz I wrote it ;)!) I'd recommend it to anyone!

Another helpful thing, is to include your lo in mealtimes, so that she eats with the family, watches what you do and thinks 'hey, I'll have a go at what mum and dad are doing!', rather tha have separate mealtimes for her - makes it so much more normal and sociable, and if you do BLW, it means that your meal doesn't get cold 'coz you're not having to feed her!

All the best,

Ax

Hey,Ray,we had kind of the same problem with the spoon. So I tried to give my lo his spoon just to play with during the day.And don't worry, she'll get over it.Just be consistent! My son now is nine months old,and is  a GOOD eater.I can't believe we had the same problems two months ago! ;D

some improvement! she has slept 12 hours the last 2 nights and is taking much better naps, which i think helps. yesterday she ate two yoghurts and today one. i think i will put puree in the yoghurt container and see if that works  ;)
