how to transfer to two naps when they are only 45 min?
« on: June 10, 2007, 15:34:02 pm »
OK, short naps are a given - I tried to increase the A time, to decrease it, I tried W2S, but probably because I am not ready to wean the paci (used only to fall asleep), nothing works and my dd naps only for 45 min for the last month or two. So, how do you arrange the baby's routine with such short naps? I figured that if I transfer her to two naps (she is more than ready to stay awake for 3, 3 1/2 hours) she will only sleep 1 1/2 during the day. Can I do that? Or are we staying with three naps untill she is older?
Any advices?
Thanks to all.

hi there
at 7mo we were still on 3 naps and two of them were 90mins each!
She is still young and needs her sleep, I think to go to 2 naps would make her overtired and cause you and her all sorts of problems. If you can still fit 3 short naps in, I would stick at it for the time being.

thanks. the problem is that dd is not tired when I put her for a nap. for example, in the morning she has to go to bed only two hours after her wake time to fit into the schedule. and she resists it, of course.

Hi there. In order to drop the catnap, both naps and A times need to extend. You can have 3 hour A times but if your naps are 45 mins that will leave you with far too little daytime sleep.

If you feel she is ready for a longer wake time in the morning, don't feel that you need to put her down at 2 hours to adhere to a "schedule". Putting her down too early could result in a shorter first nap and throw things off for the rest of the day. Don't keep her up so long that she's overtired, but if you feel that she can handle longer than 2 hours and she's resisting her nap and taking a short nap, try extending by 15 minutes or so until you reach her appropriate A time for that period. Once that nap lengthens you can focus on your next A time and nap. Once the naps are both 1.5 hours (one or both might be a bit longer or shorter, e.g. 1 hr a.m. and 2 hr p.m.) and the 2nd nap is ending around 3:30 or 4, you can work on dropping the catnap.

HTH!
