Help with the 2-1 nap swich!!!
« on: June 11, 2007, 20:07:18 pm »
Hello, I am writing because after months of trying my DD (15 months) is finally ready to switch from 2 naps to 1, but itīs definitely not as easy as you read it on the book. For the last 3 days her routine has been more or less like this:

Day 1
Wakes up at 6:30 am
Naps at 11 am for 1.5 hours
Bedtime at 6 pm

Day 2
Wakes up at 7 am (Because she woke up like around 4 am, cried a little and I went in to give her her paci, then she stayed up for a little bit then went back to sleep by herself)
Naps at 11:30 am for 1.5 hours
Bedtime at 6 pm

Day 3
Wakes up at 6 am
Naps at 10:30 am for 1.5 hours
Naps again at 3:20 pm for 40 min
Bedtime at 7 pm

Today...
Wakes up at 5:30 am
Naps at 10:30 am...donīt know for how long because she is not up yet

So my main trouble so far is how can I help her take longer than 1.5 hour naps. And how can I help her have a regular 7 am wake up time and 7 pm bedtime.  What should I do to prevent 5:30 am wakings? My DD sleeps 12 hours straight at night so early bedtime backfires because then sheīll be up early too. What would be a good way to help her stay up until 6:30 or 7 pm?
I would appreciate any advice and thank you very much for getting back to me.

I know that others have different advice for the 2-1 switch, but I had more success with shortening the am nap gradually and brnging the afternoon nap forward until the am finally disappeared and the pm nap was earlier.

You know towards the end of the transition (15months), Isabella would need a "catch up" 2 nap day... in which case I would give her 30mins am and 1.5hrs pm. So I agree with Mari that on the days she wakes so early, offer her 2 naps (shorter morning and longer pm nap). About every 3 days this would happen to us & only lasted for 2-3 weeks. By 16months, Isabella was on 1 solid nap. It was only 1.5hrs to start with as well and then extended to 2hrs (and sometimes more). The wake up time will even out as well once she finally transitions.

Don't let her sleep long in the morning cause that can only reenforce the early wakings. Let her have a catnap of no more than 30mins.

Thank you.  Lately she has been waking up at 6:30 am and napping at 11:30 am when she is tired, for 1.5 hours. When she wakes up she seems fine but by the end of the day around 5 pm she is tired, I am giving her a 6 pm bed time, just because I don't think is good to give her a cat nap late in the afternoon.  Unfortunately she can't have two naps anymore, I have been on this transition for 2 months now and at the beginning a short nap in the morning and a longer one in the afternoon was the key, but now she is ready for one nap only and my main trouble for now is to extend her nap to at least 2 hours.  But I guess it will happen when she'll be able to nap like around noon or after.

I think a nap of 1.5 hrs is perfectly fine. She's doing 11+hrs at night & the av sleep for toddlers is 13hrs in total. She might not need a nap any longer than 1.5hrs. If she can't do 2 naps anymore, let her be with 1 nap. I woudl say she's done with the transition. The nap might lengthen later on but I wouldn't be dissapointed if it doesn't. The av is 1.5-2hrs & 11hrs at night
