4 possible causes, please help
« on: June 12, 2007, 13:51:02 pm »
My 8m ds had a hard time last night and wouldn't return to sleep.

My 4 possible guesses:

1.  Teething - He has been agitated the last 2 afternoons and had a bit of trouble going down at bedtime last night.  Also, he has wanted to nurse (vigorously) and not really wanted to unlatch even when not drinking.  He appears to have his hands in his mouth only slightly more than usual, but certainly not as much as when the first 2 teeth were coming in.

2.  Return to sleep issue - he has been usually waking for hunger and returning with no problem after a quick feed.  However, he has soaked through his clothes by morning and is waking earlier for feeds which makes me think he's not truly hungry but is used to me feeding him when he wakes instead of rolling over and going back to sleep.

3  Intro to solids - because of immature GI tract and reactions to foods we were advised to wait until 8-9m to start.  I gave him 1 TBL both yesterday and the day before and he has had no skin or bowel reaction.  My intuition says this is just a coincidence that we started this the last 2 days.   Except for a few extra burps, there has been nothing physical like in the past.

4.  Lowered crib mattress last pm. - his room is dark. I highly doubt he notices or that he would roll over and think that there is a difference in his bed. The bumper pad is still on.

His routine:
6a wakes
815 nap #1 for 1hr 20
1145 nap #2 for 1hr 20min
6p bedtime

1 night feeding usually at 300a

Oh, I just thought of something.  He has had reflux but has been fine off meds for the last 10 days.  But, since I introduced food 2 days ago and he is burping a lot more it may be time to put him back on.  I will post in health area too.

Ashley, I think you're right about putting him back on the reflux meds. Sometimes it can take a little bit for the symptoms to return so 10 days isn't unheard of. I'd be very surprised if at 8 mo he was able to go off meds especially with an immature GI tract. Plus, LOs will often want to nurse more often when reflux flares up to get some relief. So all in all, it seems to me that going back on meds is best.

Hi Ashley!!
Hey...if Mark soaking through during the night is a problem - try Pamper's overnight diapers. I hear they work great. Otherwise, my friend told me about some liners you can buy to go inside the diaper to soak up more - she said they worked great for her. I'm not sure on the brand though.

Hope you (and Mark) are sleeping good again soon!  ;D

Reflux meds were the trick.  He has slowed on his vigorous nursing kick.  His diaper wasn't so wet today.  Jaci, I just moved into size 3 Huggies today.  Yep, 8m and was still in #2.  My dd was so big she was wearing 3s almost right away ;D

Oh yes, Jaci, we are sleeping better.  The key was an earlier bedtime and more nap training.  6p-6a  NO more 5a wakings!!  At least until the next tooth comes in
