4 Weeks Old - Tummy Time? Other Activities?
« on: June 16, 2007, 00:47:39 am »
Aloha Ladies,

Any suggestions on tummy time and activities for our babies which are still very young are appreciated.  We have tried to put Ethan on the floor twice but he cries after a minute.  Is he too small still?  Dad has been giving him tummy time on his chest but Ethans legs are usually curled up.

What other activities could we do with him?  He usually falls asleep pretty quick after a feeding but then has spurts where he is awake for over an hour.

Thank you for your time and suggestions.
Warmest Aloha,

Sylvia

Hiya xx
I am sure many people with have suggestions for you when they get onto the board... we are always a little quieter over the weekend so sometimes replies don't come as fast as in the week.

There are loads of tummy time suggestions in the other threads in this board so its worth having a read through.

When William was tiny he hated Tummy Time if I placed him flat on the floor.. but if I propped him up with a boppy pillow/ so his chest was resting on the pillow.. he enjoyed that .. especially if I popped a toy in front of him that he could play with. He also loved it on my tummy like your DH is doing with your LO.

I occasionally used a play mat for him too with an arch overhead from about 1 month.. he used to love being on that looking up at the toys and then playing with / hitting the toys on the arch when he could.. it doesnt have to be anything spectacular.. just something bright and contrasting.. maybe textures and sounds and they love it. xx

To be honest at your LOs age the activity that you do in activity time isnt all that important.. In the short time they are awake between feeding and sleep and nappy change they will benefit loads from spending time with you looking at your face and listening to you talk to them.. maybe looking out the window from your arms or walking round the house..

I would agree that activity time hasn't really kicked in at this point. For some babies it might be just a nappy change. I personally wouldn't put him on an activity mat quite yet as he probably won't be able to appreciate it - see the shapes, colours further away or reach out and touch.
I would focus on his senses: give him things to TOUCH or rub on his body - different textures; sheepskin, harder things, Think about SOUND so just talk to him gently - give him a tour of the house, begin to sing nursery rhymes and sounds, tell stories, talk about what you are doing. SIGHT - black and white pictures, pictures with high contrast.
Just remember he will get overstimulated quickly and won't be able to process much. Keep it simple.

when our DD was that young, she didn't care for a lot of tummy time.  Heck... still doesn't.  We used to just give her about 10-20 secs after each diaper change.  Really, not a whole lot.  Now, she still gets VERY tired for tummy time at 3 mos, so we only do tummy time in the morning, but it lasts a little longer now, like 5 min. - 10 min.

one thing she did like though, is tummy time on one of our tummies.  I would hold her so her belly was facing mine, and then leaned all the way onto my back.  Sometimes I would hold her feet and let her push and she would "crawl" up to my face.  But you still do have to pay attention to make sure he doesn't get too over tired.

Ella like alot of face to face contact at that age (and still does).  She also used to lay under her play gym and look at the things dangling.  She would only have tummy time for a couple of minutes a day but it soon got longer as she got older.

Hi there--
Not sure if you've seen this thread on tummy time

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=43648.0

and also this one on activity suggestions for 0-3 month olds

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52863.0

As pps mentioned, he's not going to do a whole lot at this age, but tummy time on Dad's tummy is perfectly fine too.  Enjoy your baby! :)
