5 month old suddenly waking at night
« on: June 19, 2007, 16:15:35 pm »
Hi - I am new to this but a religious reader and follower of the Baby Whisperer.  My daughter is nearly 5 months old and we have been an the EASY schedule since she came home from the hospital.  I would say she is a textbook/angel baby.  She has always been a good sleeper and a good eater.  I exclusively breast feed, we are on a 4 hours schedule and she takes about 2 - 3 tbsp of cereal in the evenings.  I nurse her at 7:30 and dream feed at 10 or shortly after, with a bottle - she typically takes about 5 ounces.  She takes the standard 1 1/2 nap in the morning, 1 1/2 - 2 hour in the afternoon and a catnap about 5 or 5:30.   She goes to bed very easily and puts herself to sleep at night and for naps.

The last three weeks, she has been waking between 3 and 4 in the morning.  Some nights she will settle with a pacifier and go back down and some nights she needs to eat and then will go back to sleep.  I am struggling with what to do with her.  I am not sure if it's hunger or a habit she has started and I have reinforced.  I do not rush in, I let her try to get herself back to sleep and sometimes she does, but when she does, it's just a matter of 30 minutes or so and she is awake again.  There are nights she would continue that until I finally get her up at 7.   I have read many of the posts already on the board and just am not sure what to do or try.

Any suggestions?  Thank you so much!

When did you start solids?
Can you post your routine?
Morning sleep is very light and can be disturbed by a number of things.  Overtiredness, hunger, a noise outside, milestones can all cause a baby to wake in the early morning.
Is she teething or doing any new develpmental stuff like crawling, scooting, rolling?
Post back and I will try to help.

Welcome to the boards by the way.

Thank you so much for your response.  Our routine is:

7am - eat
activity
8:30 - 9 - sleep (usually 1 hour or 1 hour 15 minutes in the morning)
11 am - eat
activity
12:30 or 1 - sleep (usually sleeps 2 hours, I often wake her after 3 hours)
3 - eat
activity
5 - 5:30 catnap (usually 30 to 45 minutes, I usually don't let her sleep longer than 45)
6 - 6:30 cereal (we have been doing cereal with a spoon for about 2 weeks)
bath and stories
7:00 eat
7:30 bedtime

Yes, she is very busy now.  She is scooting, getting herself around much more.  No signs of teeth yet.

Hope that helps - thanks again!

oh and I meant - I often wake her after 2 hours - her afternoon nap.

Thanks again, Amy

Amy, I personally would recommend that you stop the solid feeding for now. Unless the doc suggested it? It's rather early to be starting solids, and they most always cause tummy upset and gas. Especially since you're doing it in the evening, which means night is when LO is trying to digest it. If there's a reason that you need to continue, I'd move it to the morning so that she can work it through before night sleep.

I also think you may want to stop solids for a bit. You said in your first post that the problems have been occuring for 3 weeks and you started solids 2 weeks ago.  I wonder if they have anything to do with each other.  It could be that the first waking was growth or teeth or something and it has been complicated by solids.  That would be the first change I make.

Thank you - I guess when I think about it, the timing might be when we started a little cereal.  I will stop it for awhile and see what happens.  Thank you so much!  I will be back on the site, I enjoy reading it and appreciate all the great information.
